Fiat's German market
sales crumbled again during July, and while the overall
market tumbled by nearly a third Fiats sales crashed by
more than a half, and the picture was equally as bleak
at Alfa Romeo (-38.0 percent) and Lancia (-68.8
percent). The data has been issued by German automotive
trade body KBA which recorded that a total of 227,438
new cars were sold on what is traditionally Europe's
biggest car market last month, a fall of 30.2 percent
year-on-year as the ending of state "scrappage"
incentives kept consumers away from the showrooms.
The Fiat brand saw sales of 6,776 cars in Germany last
month which was down 51.1 percent on the same month last
year and gave the Italian carmaker a 2.9 percent share
of the market for July. The dismal performance -
amplified by Fiat's reputation as the market's biggest
discounter - left it with the honour of being the worst
performing mass-selling brand in Germany during July.
Other major brands to suffer a torrid July in Germany
included Skoda (-50.2 percent), Honda (-48.2 percent),
Toyota (-46.7 percent), French carmakers, Peugeot (-44.7
percent) and Citroën (-44.2 percent) and GM's Opel unit
(-43.5). Kia also slumped, the Korean firm shed 40
percent.
The other Fiat Group Automobiles (FGA) brands also had
an unrewarding month in Germany. Alfa Romeo Germany,
anticipating the arrival of the new Giulietta on this
market, was in three figure sales: 780 cars equating to
a 38 percent year-on-year fall and giving it a 0.3 share
of all registrations in Germany for the month. Lancia
managed just 101 registrations in July and that added up
to a year-on-year collapse of 68.8 percent.
For the year-to-date the sales picture is highly
negative for the German new car market as a total of
1,706,119 registrations adds up to a fall of more than a
quarter (-26.1 percent) compared to the opening seven
months of last year. For the Fiat brand its even worse
scenario though: it's sales have declined over the
period at more than double the market's dip: 50,227
registrations in total from January to July means a
year-on-year fall of 56.2 percent. Fiat's share of the
German new car market for the year-to-date now stands a
2.9 percent.
Alfa Romeo has 4,328 registrations in Germany for the
year-to-date which is down 45.2 percent on the same
period last year and gives it a 0.3 percent share of all
sales. Lancia meanwhile is on 910 units for the
year-to-date and is down 62.4 percent.
Chrysler Group, 20 percent owned by Fiat Group and with
interlocking fortunes going forward, managed just 354
registrations combined across it's three brands -
Chrysler, Dodge and Jeep - in Germany last month and
that added up to a 47.8 percent year-on-year fall. For
the year-to-date the U.S. carmaker has a total of 3,862
sales on this market and is down by just over a quarter
(-26.1 percent) on the same seven month period of last
year.
