Now in its third year of
running, the Cholmondeley Pageant of Power (which is set
in the grounds of Cholmondeley Castle near Nantwich,
Cheshire, UK) has definitely come of age especially with a
selection of highly valuable cars from the late Tom Wheatcroft Grand Prix collection taking to the circuit.
These included the ex Nuvolari Maserati 8CM and Ascari’s
double World Championship winning Ferrari 500 which was
being driven by Tom’s son Kevin. The event has been
compared to the Goodwood Festival of Speed, but has made
a name for itself through its own success and marked
itself down as a great family weekend event. This year,
the pageant has been awarded the Visit Chester &
Cheshire tourism event of the year. Apart from the bikes
and cars on the track, there are also army displays and
action on the lake along with aerobatic displays and
various car club stands with a jaw dropping array of
vehicles both classic and modern.
This year was our
second visit to the show and it coincided with the Club
Lancia Sport weekend away where members enjoyed a day at
the Curborough sprint circuit before making their way
over to Cholmondeley. The cars that stole this year’s
show were undoubtedly the fire breathing aero engined
Packard Bentley and “Brutus”, the 47 litre BMW aero
monster which graced our shores for the first time. The
crowds flocked over to see huge flames spewing out from
the exhausts, a fantastic sight and sound. All of this
along with an Auto Union D type, which was a fantastic
coup for “Chumly”.
The celebrity chef, James Martin, was
in action driving his Ferrari 275 GTB 4CAM with great
verve on the course, but top awards must go to the drivers of the
Bentley GT Supersport and Lamborghini Gallardo LP570-4
Superleggera who, amongst others, managed to get their
cars airborne over a bridge before the flying finish.
Having had an enjoyable Saturday, we then joined the
estimated ten thousand people at the outdoor concert
arena in the evening where we enjoyed a great few hours
listening and partaking in the proms concert whilst
sipping our champagne and watching the
accompanying firework display as a way of celebrating
our wedding anniversary the following day. All in all, this is a
fantastic event for the North West, one which will
undoubtedly grow in strength. I’ve already got next
year’s date penned in the diary.
