Luca Rossetti turned in a masterful performance on his first visit to the demanding Rajd Polski, steering clear of the trouble all around him in the Abarth Grande Punto S2000 to earn a deserved visit to the FIA European Rally Championship (ERC) podium and extend his title advantage further with three rounds completed.

Rossetti, the 2008 ERC Champion, had spent Saturday's opening leg of the 67th Rajd Polski as the first runner on the road thanks to winning Friday's double-superspecial, but was slowed as he was sweeping gravel from the front. However a fighting drive through the seven stages that made up yesterday's second and final leg saw him overcome Maciej Oleksowicz (Ford Fiesta S2000) to move up the order to fourth place overall and, most importantly, third place in the European standings. The Italian was pleased with the result: "It was a totally new experience for me. The rally was quite different to those I used to compete in. I’m happy with the result. The most important thing is to maintain the lead in European Rally Championship."

In the ERC points standings Rossetti picked up 20 points for his sterling weekend's work, raising his tally after 3 rounds to 103 points. More pleasing for Rossetti was that both his main ERC title rivals, fellow Italians Luca Betti and Corrado Fontana, dropped out of the demanding rally that claimed a whole host of high profile victims. The former driver failed to pick up a single point as retired on leg one while the latter collected just one point thanks to being in fifth place in the ERC finishing order on the first day. In means that Rossetti has a comfortable 63 point cushion to his closest rival, Betti (40 points), with three rounds completed.

The Scorpion driver's tally was reduced slightly as several rapid Polish drivers were registered for the ERC, including rally winner Kajetan Kajetanowicz who as a result moves into third place in the standings, behind Rossetti and Betti, with 37 points, while Maciej Oleksowicz (35 points) is now fourth. "It was a fantastic rally," said Oleksowicz. "The result was great as well. We have fought with top European and Polish drivers. At the end I broke an alternator belt, but luckily managed to reach the finish line." Both Poles have also overhauled Fontana who has edged onto 32 points now thanks to the solitary point he collected over the weekend.

In fifth in the championship classification comes Michal Solowow who finished second in the ERC standings on the rally, and as a result he collects 30 points. Solowow, who formerly campaigned a private Abarth Grande Punto S2000 and is an ERC regular, used the 67th Rajd Polski to kick off a limited ERC programme this year and was happy with the weekend's result, saying last night: "Second place overall and a win during Day 2 is a great result. The competition was great."

While Rossetti was successfully securing a decent helping of ERC points, Kajetanowicz co-driven by Jaroslaw Baran (Subaru Impreza) won 67th Rally Poland overall, and at the same time it was a second consecutive win in the 2010 Platinum Polish Rally Championship for Subaru Poland Rally Team duo. Co-driver Baran paired by the late Janusz Kulig won Rally Poland in 2002, but for Kajetanowicz it was his first victory in this prestigious event. Thanks to this success, the Subaru driver became a new leader of Platinum Polish Rally Championship. "It is great to win such a prestigious, tough and difficult rally," said the delighted winner. "Before the event we were not the favorites. The battle on the stages was great."

Solowow and Maciej Baran (Ford Fiesta S2000) took second place overall. They managed to win second day of competition. After three rounds of Platinum Polish Rally Championship Solowow is a runner-up in the series with a sole point gap to Kajetanowicz. Tomasz Kuchar (Peugeot 207 S2000) and Rossetti had a epic final day battle for third position. Kuchar managed to win the duel, however he lost a leadership in Polish championship. "The whole event was very tough," said Kuchar. "The level of competition presented by Kajetan and Michal Solowow was amazing. Luca Rossetti took fourth place, which means the rally league in Poland is very strong."

Over 250 kms of gravel stages were a demanding test for many drivers. Bryan Bouffier (Peugeot 207 S2000) and Michal Kosciuszko (Skoda Fabia S2000), due to engine maladies, did not complete the event. On the penultimate test Leszek Kuzaj rolled his Skoda Fabia S2000 and was forced to use the SupeRally system. On the first day, the same thing happened to Orlen Team duo, Krzysztof Holowczyc and Szymon Ruta. Thanks to major car modifications, Holowczyc took third place in the classification of the second day. "The last loop of stages was good," said Holowczyc
. "I faced major technical problems almost through the whole event. We decided to change suspension and from then on everything went fine. We had a setup Kris Meeke used in this year’s Rally Curitiba." Michal and Grzegorz Bebenek took a third consecutive win in Citroen Racing Trophy. They were faster than Jan Chmielewski by over five minutes.

Traditionally the Rajd Polski attracts thousands of fans, and this year was no different. As usual beautiful and sunny weather accompanied the event. The rally is one of the oldest motorsport events in the world. The first edition of Polish classic was held in 1921. All competitors tackled the loop from Warsaw through Bialowieza and back to Warsaw. Tadeusz Heyne (Dodge) was the fastest among the six starters and went down to the history of the event. In the twenties and thirties there were twelve editions of the event. Later on, it was stopped by the onset of World War II and returned in 1947. Since 1960 the history of the Rajd Polski as a round of the FIA European Rally Championship got underway and names like Rauno Aaltonen, Tony Fall, Timo Mäkinen, Jean-Claude Andruet, Walter Röhrl, Bernard Darniche, Antonio Zanini or Sobieslaw Zasada started to become familiar to the entry and the winners' lists. In 1973, right after the launch of the FIA World Rally Championship, the event was adopted for the series once and won by Achim Warmbold co-driven by Jean Todt.

Provisional classification of FIA European Rally Championship (after 3 rounds):

1. Luca Rossetti – 103 pts
2. Luca Betti – 40 pts.
3. Kajetan Kajetanowicz – 37 pts.
4. Maciej Oleksowicz – 35 pts.
5. Corrado Fontana – 32 pts.
6. Michal Solowow – 30 pts.
