Jason White
is showing the best possible form to chase a Lamborghini
victory on the Targa Tasmania in April as he leads the
inaugural Australian Tarmac Challenge with two wins out
of the two rounds held so far in his Gallardo
Superleggera rally car. A dominant performances at the recent Targa
Wrest Point has put him 50 points clear of his nearest rivals, however with results from only three of the four
round series counting, the titles are far from decided.
Meanwhile Sydney motoring journalist Dean Evans, and his
co-driver, Simone Bachmann, hold a commanding lead in
the Showroom competition after a first and second place
in their Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution X while Bill Pye
leads out the classic category.
Driving his fire breathing Lamborghini Gallardo Superleggera, White
and his co-driving uncle, John White, have now won both events in the
championship.
Victory in December’s Mt Buller Sprint in Victoria, was followed by a repeat
performance in the longer Targa Wrest Point in Tasmania. They now lead the
modern competition by 50 points.
In equal second place are West Australian drivers Dean Herridge (Subaru Impreza
WRX STI) and Steve Jones (Nissan GT-R). Jones was second at Mt Buller and third
in Targa Wrest Point, while Herridge mirrored those results.
Daniel Ford has steered his Chevrolet Corvette Z06 into fourth place, while
Simon Gillett is fifth in his Subaru Impreza WRX STI.
The classic competition sees Pye and co-driver John Lenne with a commanding 84 point
lead in their Porsche 911 Carrera RS, ahead of a brace of Ford Falcons and
Cortinas.
Pye’s biggest challenge is expected to come from the similar German supercar of
Rex Broadbent, however the Victorian didn’t contest Targa Wrest Point, giving
his NSW rival the advantage.
That has allowed Brendan Diprose and Wayne Daly to move into second place in
their 1969 Ford Falcon GTHO, followed by the 1963 Ford Cortina of Michael
Arundel and Michael Verge.
Television personality Glenn Ridge is fourth in a Falcon GT, while Broadbent has
slipped to equal fifth in the standings, 190 points behind Pye.
Victoria hosts the next round of the Australian Tarmac Championship, the Lake
Mountain Sprint which takes place next month, before the king of tarmac events in Australia, Targa
Tasmania, concludes the championship from April 27 to May 2.
With two events remaining, White will be intent on scoring as many points as
possible in order to be crowned the inaugural Australian Tarmac Champion.
