Maserati's leading drivers have extended their lead in the FIA GT1 World Championship after a sixth place for Bartels and Bertolini in the Vitaphone Racing MC12 in the Championship Race at the Nürburgring yesterday.

Maserati's leading drivers have extended their lead in the FIA GT1 World Championship after a sixth place for Bartels and Bertolini in their #1 Vitaphone Racing Maserati MC12 in the "Championship Race" at the Nürburgring round yesterday which was sufficient to enable them to extend their overall lead to 14 points. That solid result came straight off the back of a fourth place finish for the duo in the previous day's "Qualifying Race".

After starting out from tenth place yesterday, the #1 Maserati MC12, started by Bertolini, was able to advance three positions right after the start line until it reached fifth. Going fast, Bartels continued to push the car to gain more ground, but his maneuver was limited due to rules in force regarding the car's weight and restrictor plates.

"The rules penalize Maserati MC12s, especially when accelerating, making it really hard to overtake,” said Bartels at the end of yesterday's race. “I struggled with that up to the end; maybe I could have gotten a fifth place, but at the last lap I saw that Stefan Muecke was set on overtaking me and I let him do it thinking I should reach the finish line without compromising the result, so I did not take further risks. It was a tough weekend, but despite it all we still gained precious points for the classification. We have an advantage, but other adversaries have become dangerous, so we have to be well prepared for the next race in Algarve".

The Vitaphone Racing Team's other Maserati MC12, the #2 shared by Bernoldi and Ramos, came in twelfth position, penalised by a collision with the #5 Ford while it was fighting for ninth place. After seeing the maneuver once more, race officials decided to impose a drive-through penalty on Westbrook.

Longin and Pier Guidi in the #34 Triple H Team MC12 performed well. Despite starting out twenty first due to an accident during the previous day's qualifying race, the finished in ninth place, with the Italian driver posting the fastest lap of the race: on lap seventeen with a time of 1:58.370 on the 5.148 km Nürburgring circuit. "After Saturday's collision during the Qualifying Race, our mechanics did a great repair job, giving us back a perfect car,” explained Guidi. “We are satisfied because we were able to recover extraordinarily well: from twenty first to ninth place. I'm sure that if the accident in the Qualifying Race had not occurred, we would have reached one of the highest positions".

The two German drivers, Mueller and Heger, in the sister #33 Triple H Team MC12 were not lucky. They reached the finish line twentieth place in their Maserati, slowed down by a collision with an adversary at the first corner after the start. The next round of the FIA GT1 World Championship is scheduled to take place on 19 September in Algarve, Portugal.
