With the first race of the inaugural Trofeo Maserati
GranTurismo less than
a month away, the new racing variant of the Maserati GranTurismo has successfully
completed testing at Italy’s Vallelunga race track prior to round one of the
series kicking off at Monza on 23 May.A
long distance race simulation was completed to make the
final checks of the cars assigned to drivers, some of
whom went to the Italian circuit to get their first feel
of the cars they will be driving the season, including
Emanuele Smurra, the winner of the first Trofeo Maserati,
held in 2003. More than 16 drivers from various European
countries participated in the test.
The GranTurismo MC Trofeo is adapted from the
GranTurismo S and, although it is full racing car, it is
close enough to the road-version that it was built on
the same assembly line, in the famous Maserati factory in Viale Ciro Menotti, in Modena, as the road cars.
The inaugural Trofeo Maserati GranTurismo MC
will consist of seven
rounds including some of the most prestigious European circuits, held
concurrently with the FIA World Touring Car Championship
and for the last round, with the Italian Formula
3 Championship.
The series will debut at Monza (I) on 23 May, followed
by the rounds at Zolder (B) - 20 June, Brands Hatch (GB)
- 18 July, Brno (CZ) - 1 August, Oschersleben (D) - 5
September, Valencia (E) -19 September and the concluding
round at Mugello (I) on 10 October.
In addition to the GranTurismo MC Trofeo run directly by
Maserati Corse, GranTurismo MC GT4 cars purchased by private
teams may also participate in the championship. These
will race in a separate classification from the Trofeo
cars. The formula consists of two 40-minute-long free practice
sessions on the Friday, two 20-minute-long qualifying
sessions on the Saturday and two races (38-minutes long + 1
lap) on the Sunday.
Participating in the Trofeo Maserati GranTurismo MC
costs 162,000 euros plus VAT for the entire season (168,000
euros plus VAT should a two-driver team share the driving)
while the owners of GranTurismo GT4s may enter the race
for 45,000 euros plus VAT.
At each Trofeo round, Maserati will organize a series of
events for its customers or prospective customers.
During the Vallelunga testing session at the weekend potential
customers were given the chance to try out the entire
Maserati range at the track, while on Sunday there was a
practice session open for all owners of Maseratis who
wished to try out the track with their cars.
At
Monza there will also be marketing and sales activities
to promote the brand and product range, fitting in with the Trofeo Maserati
GranTurismo MC's philosophy, a series reserved for gentlemen
drivers who wish to race with a car derived from the one
they drive every day.
The first round of the Trofeo Maserati GranTurismo MC
will be held on 23 May in Monza.
