Alfa
Romeo will have one new model version to show off on the
occasion of next month's Bologna Motor Show as it will
add an LPG version to the Giulietta range; the Euro 5
120 CV 1.4 Turbo bi-fuel model will come with the 5-door
hatchback's usual three specification levels. The
smaller MiTo already offers an LPG version meaning that
this fuel option is now effectively completed across the
Alfa Romeo production range.
Equipped with the Euro 5-compliant 120 CV 1.4 Turbo
bi-fuel engine, the new Giulietta LPG will be available
in three different trim levels (Giulietta, Progression
and Distinctive) for all major European markets, and it
boasts leading category performance and running costs.
Specifically, with maximum power of 120 CV (88 kW) at
5,000 rpm and maximum torque of 206 Nm (21 kgm) at 1,750
rpm, the Giulietta LPG reaches a capable top speed of
195 km/h while accelerating from 0 to 100 km/h in 10.3
seconds.
Compared with petrol and diesel fuel, LPG cuts
particulate emissions to zero and slashes the emission
of other pollutant substances (up to 15% less carbon
dioxide, up to 20% less carbon monoxide and up to 60%
less unburnt hydrocarbons). Thanks to these
characteristics, LPG prolongs the life of the engine and
improves the quality of the environment. Moreover, LPG
supply is exempt from the restrictions of accessing city
centres and ecological traffic restrictions, and it lets
you park in car parks up to level -1. At the same time,
the Alfa Romeo Giulietta LPG supply does not affect car
performance, which is comparable to a petrol version.
Lastly, it must be remembered that LPG is a much cheaper
fuel than petrol, diesel or methane (the price per litre
is about 50% less than unleaded petrol) and the
distribution network is widespread throughout Europe,
with more than 10,000 points of sale.
Unlike a "transformation" in the aftermarket, the 120 CV
1.4 LPG Turbo engine has been redesigned for integration
of the LPG system by using specific materials and
components and applying dedicated technology. In detail,
this engine has valves and valve seats with
configurations and materials specially designed for LPG
operation. It is equipped with a special intake system
and all the additional electrical wiring already
built-in. What's more, for this engine Alfa Romeo has
developed a brand-new single engine control unit able to
manage both types of fuel. Moreover, the LPG system is
factory-fitted for maximum reliability and integration
(each car is certified, tested and guaranteed by Alfa
Romeo Automobiles and, as such, can take advantage of
the government incentive schemes in various European
countries).
The Giulietta Turbo LPG always starts up on petrol and
switches automatically to LPG when optimal conditions
are achieved (engine water temperature, minimum engine
rpm threshold). It is of course possible to switch from
one fuel to another whilst driving by pressing a special
button built into the dashboard on the central tunnel.
If the driver finishes the LPG inside the tank,
switching to petrol operation takes place automatically
to ensure a smooth drive.
The toroid type
(ring-shaped) LPG tank has a 38-litre capacity and is
located in the spare wheel housing. The LPG tank is
certified in accordance with current regulations to
provide safety in all environmental and operating
conditions. In Italy, the tank has a life of 10 years
from the registration date of the car. If the car has
been registered in another country, the LPG tank
duration and testing/inspection procedures may vary
depending on the national regulations in force in that
country.
