03.11.2011 NOVITEC SUPERCHARGES THE ULTRA-EXCLUSIVE FERRARI SA APERTA

The Ferrari SA Aperta is one of the most exclusive Ferrari sports cars of all time and just 80 were built; now Novitec Rosso has fitted its twin-supercharger conversion bumping power output of the V12 from the standard 670 hp to a claimed 888 hp.

The Ferrari SA Aperta is one of the most exclusive Ferrari sports cars of the modern era. Only 80 examples were built in a one-time limited-edition production run. Novitec Rosso, a well-known tuner of the sports cars from Maranello, has turned its attentions to this unique drop-top version of the 599 GTB Fiorano. Fitting its stock twin-supercharger conversion bumps power output of the V12 engine from the standard 670 hp to a claimed 888 hp and boosts peak torque to a claimed 862 Nm, giving the two-seater a potential top speed of more than 340 km/h.

At the heart of the German tuner's new project for the SA Aperta is its bi-compressor engine conversion. Two mechanical superchargers, lubricated by a dedicated oil circuit, are adapted to the six-litre, four-valve V12 engine and driven by a cogged-belt system. The conversion also includes a large water-to-air intercooler with dedicated water circuit.

The intake side of the engine is reconfigured with a custom-developed intake manifold, higher-performance injectors and sport air filters whose air supply is optimised by special air routing. On the outlet side there are exhaust manifolds calibrated to the bi-compressor engine and Novitec's stainless-steel exhaust system each with four black-coated tailpipes with a diameter of 90 millimeters. The electronically controlled butterfly valve in the exhaust allows for changing the exhaust note at the push of the ‘Manettino’ button on the steering wheel. Novitec's new components operate in conjunction with a reprogrammed engine management system.

The resulting, claimed, power increase amounts to 218 hp (160.4 kW), raising output up to 888 hp (653 kW) at 8,400 rpm; that is coupled to a new claimed peak torque of 862 Nm at 6,600 rpm, a gain of 242 Nm over its production brethren.

Together with the F1 Superfast six-speed transmission, Novitec's bi-compressor version delivers impressive performance. From rest the car sprints to 100 km/h in a claimed 3.1 seconds. After a claimed 9.1 seconds it reaches a speed of 200 km/h; the 300-km/h barrier is then reached after 21.9 seconds. Top speed is claimed to be in excess of 340 km/h.

The body of the Ferrari SA Aperta also gets some tweaks comprising of a 599 GTO-style front spoiler lip, side skirts and a rear fascia that aims to match the look of the front fascia. All the clear-coated carbon-fibre components come with a matte finish for a racing 'look'. Further highlights are the blacked-out lamps that are available for all the 599 series models. The set includes tail lamps, third brake light, rear fog lamp and side repeaters.

Also in the visual area are the use of Novitec's forged wheels, which were custom-developed for the Ferrari 599. In a staggered combination of 21-inch wheels at the front and 22-inch wheels at the rear they aim to put more emphasis on the wedge-shaped appearance of the sports car. With a weight of only 10.4 kilograms the Novitec Rosso NF4 10Jx21 alloy wheels for the front axle are amongst the lighter wheels in its size range. The same is true for the 12Jx22 rear wheels that weighs in at 13.8 kilograms. The reduction in unsprung weight has positive effects on handling, says the tuner, as do the markedly wider tyres. Pirelli PZero tyres come in size 295/25 ZR 21 at the front and in size 335/25 ZR 22 at the rear.

Also custom-developed for the drop-top special model are sport springs. They are calibrated to work with the standard shocks and lower the ride height of the SA Aperta by some 25 millimeters. The suspension can be also be fitted with a front axle lift system. The vehicle's front end is raised by 40 millimeters at the push of a button in the cockpit for safely navigating past obstacles such as underground parking ramps or speed bumps without beaching the front spoiler. Upon reaching a speed of 80 km/h or at the second push of the button the suspension reverts to its original position.
