The Fiat Freemont has
just arrived in Brazil, the rebadged Dodge Journey
making the trip from Mexico where it is built, in a big
part to satisfy a bailout requirement that Chrysler
Group models are sold on the Brazilian market.
						The first Chrysler Group
product to be rebadged by Fiat Group, the Freemont
minivan was launched in Italy in June. Like Italy,
Brazil will receive the R/T-specified version which is
imported from the Toluca plant in Mexico where the Dodge
Journey is built for North American markets.
						Putting the Freemont
onto the Fiat price lists in Brazil, the Italian
carmaker's biggest global market, will satisfy a
requirement struck between the U.S. Treasury Department
and the Fiat when the latter took management control of
the former in 2009, that being that Chrysler Group
products would be sold in Brazil through Fiat's vast
network of showrooms. However with Chrysler's minimal
name recognition in Latin America's largest market, Fiat
was successfully able to later renegotiate this clause
to allow Chrysler Group vehicles to be rebadged and sold
						as Fiat models.
						Unlike the European
market bound Freemont, which is equipped with Fiat
Powertrain's 2.0 Multijet turbodiesel, the Brazilian
version gets the 2.4-litre, 16v "World Gasoline Engine"
(WGE) which is sold in North America and which develops
maximum output of 172 hp at 6,000 rpm. The engine is
hooked up to the automatic transmission (torque
converter, with four speeds forward and the option of
sequential changes and a reverse) as used with the WGE
						application.
						While the European
market Freemont remained unchanged from Journey R/T
version, apart from the Fiat badging, despite claims
from Fiat that the suspension had been retuned, Fiat
Automóveis says that for Brazil there has been a
fundamental suspension rethink. In its press release to
announce the Freemont's arrival it says: "Calibrations
were rethinking by Fiat's engineering, striving for a
more general structure in accordance with the taste of
Brazilian consumers. Virtually everything has been
revised, including the attack of the suspension
stiffness, improving the geometry of the front assembly
to reduce the roll angle, and calibration of the springs
and shock absorbers. These interventions have optimised
the balance between comfort and driving, making it more
in line with our standards." (The Journey/Freemont
features McPherson independent front suspension, helical
springs, shock absorbers and an anti-roll bar. At the
rear it has a four-arm multilink system with helical
springs, shock absorbers and stabiliser bar).
						The wheels are light
alloy with 16-inch rims fitted with 225/65 R16 tyres
(Emotion), or 17 inch rims with 225/65 R17 tyres
(Precision). The all-weather tyres that remained for the
European market are carried over for Brazil.
						For Brazil there is
the choice of two specifications: Emotion or Precision.
The entry-level model, Emotion, reaches the showrooms
well equipped, and the standard equipment list comprises
of ABS, EBD, BAS, ESP, ASR, ERM, TSC, keyless entry/go,
front airbags, climate control with two temperature
zones, Uconnect multimedia system with 4.3 inch touch
screen, which includes radio/CD/MP3, USB input,
auxiliary input and Bluetooth connectivity with voice
control, electronic central of vehicle information (EVIC),
leather wrapped steering wheel with adjustable height
and depth plus radio control, cruise control and trip
computer, wheel of alloy with rim of 16 inches, fog
lamps, tire pressure sensor, alarm, among others.
Longitudinal roof fixed bars and adjustable cross bars
						are optional.
						The Freemont Precision
level meanwhile adds a third row of seats, which
increases seating to seven seats, automatic digital air
conditioning with three temperature areas; sidebags and
window bags; twilight sensor and rear parking sensor,
adjustable roof bars (longitudinal and transverse),
driver's seat with power adjustment, power folding door
mirrors and 17 inch wheels. The Precision level has
leather-covered seats and sunroof as options.
						On the Brazilian
market the Freemont comes with an unlimited mileage
three-year warranty. Fiat Automóveis' network of more
than 560 dealers across the country can give the
necessary support to the owner; however Freemont buyers
will also part of the privileged relationship program,
Club L'Unico. Benefits include lodging and
						alternate transportation for the driver and passengers;
services that includes reservations for shows and
restaurants; vehicle reservations with unlimited time if
the car is in the dealership; and, mechanical assistance
or towing in case of electrical or mechanical failure,
flat or damaged tyre, lost keys, lack of fuel and or
accidents. Owners also have access to full assistance in
emergency situations, 24 hours a day, including Sundays
						and holidays, throughout Brazil.
