Chrysler Group saw its
sales climb by 13 percent year-on-year to 95,102 units
during February (ten thousand units up on the same month
last year), led by the Jeep brand which was up by a
quarter and Ram which was up by four fifths; however the
carmaker significantly underperformed the overall market
which jumped by 27 percent.
Chrysler's improvement
was led by the full Jeep product lineup which all posted
gains, ranging from 19 to 61 percent year-on-year,
although the combined total sales increased added up to
only 5,000 extra units, and the Ram pickup truck brand
which was up 81 percent. Dodge ended the month flat (+2
percent) while Chrysler lost a quarter of its sales with
the Sebring, now renamed as the 200, losing significant
sales despite its recent refresh. February however
marked the 11th consecutive month of year-over-year
sales gains for the Chrysler Group.
While the U.S. market
jumped 27 percent year-on-year last month Chrysler (+13
percent) and Ford (+14 percent) missed out, the Detroit
pair being the main laggards. The big winners were GM
(+46 percent) and Toyota (+42 percent). The other two
key Japanese brands had a strong month: Nissan (+32
percent) and Honda (+22 percent). However incentive
spending jumped last month to distort the overall
picture.
“Our retail sales were up substantially in February,
proof positive that the 16 all-new or
significantly-refreshed models we launched during 2010
are resonating with consumers,” believes Fred Diaz,
President and CEO Ram Truck Brand and Lead Executive for
U.S. Sales. “The sustained buzz generated by our Super
Bowl commercial has added to the interest and excitement
in our 2011 models as they land in dealership showrooms
in volume.” Chrysler Group finished the month with a
68-day supply of inventory (269,107 units). U.S.
industry sales figures for February are projected at an
estimated 13.4 SAAR.
