The UK market's slide eased to a fall of 7.66 percent
year-on-year last month, however while there was no
respite for Fiat which lost just under a quarter of its
sales there was better news for Alfa Romeo which gained
just over a quarter. In total 63,424 new cars were sold
in the UK last month compared to 68,686 during February
2010 according to industry body SMMT.
With 1,343 sales in the UK last month Fiat Automobiles
was four hundred units shy of February 2010's total of
1,752 registrations, a year-on-year decline of 23.34
percent and correspondingly its market share slipped
from 2.55 to 2.12 percent for the period year-on-year.
While Fiat headed south, Alfa Romeo went north and it's
284 units last month versus 224 for the corresponding
period a year ago was up 26.79 percent and its market
share for the month thus rose from 0.33 to 0.45 percent.
Abarth was relatively flat but also outperformed the
market, 35 units sold during February compared to 33
during the same month a year ago added up to a 6.06
percent year-on-year improvement. The Scorpion's market
share as was up too, from 0.05 to 0.06 percent
year-on-year.
After the first two months of the year 192,235 new cars
have been sold in the UK which is twenty two thousand
units and 10.24 percent down on the same period last
year. For the year-to-date Fiat has a total of 3,831
sales in the UK, down nearly two thousand units down
year-on-year (5,724 units in February 2010), a
year-on-year fall of 33.07 percent. That means that
Fiat's share of the UK market for the opening two months
of the year slides from 2.67 to 1.99 percent.
Alfa Romeo's start to the year is a big improvement on
the same period last year and 879 registrations for
January and February combined compared to 598 units for
the opening two months of 2010 equates to a 46.99
percent increase. Alfa Romeo's market share thus climbs
from 0.28 to 0.46 percent year-on-year for the
year-to-date. Abarth is on 113 registrations after the
first two months of the year, up 12 units and 11.88
percent on the same period of 2010. It's market share
rises fractionally from 0.05 to 0.06 percent.
The Chrysler Group, now 25 percent owned by Fiat,
suffered last month. With Dodge now withdrawn from the
market that leaves just two brands. Chrysler, which the
carmaker hopes to relaunch in the UK, posted 18 sales,
three down from the same period last year a 14.29
percent year on year fall while Jeep halved from 90
units in February 2010 to 44 units last month (-51.11
percent). For the year to date the remaining two
Chrysler Group brands have both seen their sales half
year-on-year, Chrysler is on 74 registrations and is
down 46.76 percent (139 units year-to-date 2010) while
Jeep is on 124 registrations a contraction of 52.31
percent (260 units year-to-date 2010).
