The refreshed Jeep Compass (above), now with
"trail rated" 4x4 capability, saw its sales
rise 90 percent year-on-year last month
while the Grande Cherokee (+192 percent) and
Patriot (+80 percent) also provided the off
road brand with much momentum. |

The Chrysler Group has
reported U.S. sales of 115,363 for May, a 10.1 percent
year-on-year increase driven almost exclusively by the
Jeep brand (+55 percent) as Chrysler (-21 percent) and
Dodge (-5 percent) fell and Ram rose 13 percent. In May
the Chrysler Group sold 104,819 units while last month
was also its best May sales performance since 2008.
The U.S. market fell 3.7
percent last month, partly due to a slowdown in sales
from the leading Japanese brands which are being hit by
component supply shortages. Chrysler (+10.1 percent) and
Hyundai (+20.7 percent) were the market's only big
winners while the Chrysler Group's Detroit rivals were
both in negative territory: Ford (-1 percent) and GM
(-1.2 percent). The key Japanese carmakers all lost
significant ground: Toyota (-33 percent), Honda (-23
percent) and Nissan (-9.1 percent). The Chrysler Group
took a 10.9 percent share of the market for the month
which in fact put it ahead of Toyota (10.2 percent).
Sales of the refreshed Chrysler 200/Sebring were up 154
percent year-on-year in May, albeit to just over seven
thousand units, while the newly facelifted 300 however
continues to lose ground, it was down 1,000 units and 28
percent year-on-year. Also pushing down the Chrysler
brand's 21 percent year-on-year fall was the refreshed
Town & Country with its sales dropping by a half
year-on-year. However in a small boost to the Chrysler
brand, in May it was named “Top Popular Brand” in
AutoPacific’s 15th annual Vehicle Satisfaction Awards,
and the Town & Country took the top spot in the
“Minivan” category. AutoPacific’s Vehicle Satisfaction
Award measures how satisfied an owner is with his or her
new vehicle.
The Jeep division led
the way in year-on-year terms during May with its sales
up by more than 12,000 units on last May, a rise of 55
percent. Its top performer, as ever, was the Grand
Cherokee (+192 percent). The Grand Cherokee won
AutoPacific’s Vehicle Satisfaction Award in the “Premium
Mid-size SUV” category. The refreshed Compass,
now with "trail rated" 4x4 capability (+90 percent) and
Patriot (+80 percent) also provided much momentum.
Dodge fell 5 percent
and two thousand units during May. The Durango SUV's
4,358 units counterbalanced a decline in sales across
almost all its range as only the Nito was up, after
posting just over a hundred unit gain, and the Caravan
was flat. The recently refreshed Avenger, Charger and
Journey all posted year-on-year falls for May. The
latter was was the winner last month of the 2011 “Family
Car of Texas” award. The Texas Auto Writers Association
(TAWA) handed over the prize after more than 50
journalists had the chance to get behind the wheel and
drive the Journey at the group’s annual Spring Roundup
at the Texas Motor Speedway in Fort Worth.
The Ram brand was up
by 13 percent to 21,467 units in May, led by the Ram
pick up which gained 16 percent and three thousand sales
year-on-year. The newly relaunched Fiat brand added
1,759 units last month in the U.S. to continue to
positive impact on the Chrysler Group's overall volumes
although sales of the 500 supermini still remain far
below initial targets as the national roll out stutters
into life.
“Chrysler Group just posted its 14th consecutive month
of year-over-year sales gains, confirmation that our
2011 models continue to resonate with consumers,” said
Fred Diaz, President and CEO – Ram Truck Brand and Lead
Executive for U.S. Sales. “Our retail sales were up 27
percent in May, driven in large part by our new models.
Ram pickup trucks and all of our Jeep brand models
posted sales increases in May, despite high, fluctuating
gas prices.” The Chrysler Group finished the month with
a 65-day supply of inventory (311,453 units). U.S.
industry sales figures for May are projected at an
estimated 12.0 SAAR.
