Fiat Group Automobiles
and Fiat Powertrain were present this week with their
own stand at the NGVA Europe International Show and
Workshops event in Berlin. The event is organised by
NGVA Europe (European Natural and Bio Gas Vehicles
Association), the European natural gas vehicle
association whose members are all leading European
companies, one of which is Fiat Group Automobiles. Its
mission is to develop a sustainable and advantageous
market for this type of vehicle throughout Europe.
						Fiat was also "Bronze"
sponsor of the event. This was a way of reasserting the
						company's commitment to sustainable mobility,
contributing to disseminating the culture of methane and
introducing the most eco-friendly solutions on today's
						market to the general public.
						A leader in the
methane car and commercial vehicle sector, Fiat
exhibited two vehicles at its stand: a Qubo Natural
Power and a Doblò Natural Power. Also on the stand was
						the 1.4 16v Fire T-Jet with CNG bi-fuel configuration,
designed by Fiat Powertrain from the beginning with
various special features with respect to a normal
						petrol-only engine.
						Fiat believes that
methane engines are the most appropriate technological
choice for the immediate future to contribute to solving
the problem of pollution in cities because methane it is
the cleanest fuel currently available. Fiat has been a
pioneer of this technology for more than 10 years, leads
the field in Europe for vehicles with factory-fitted
methane systems (OEM) with nearly 400,000 units sold to
date. We should not forget that Fiat is the first and
only manufacturer to offer, in its Natural Power range,
a total of 10 models of cars and commercial vehicles
designed to meet the mobility requirements of a truly
						broad public, including transport professionals.
						Today, the Natural
Power range is the main pillar of Fiat's environmental
protection strategy, a strategy which has led to its
undisputed European leadership. In fact, according to
analyses carried out by the independent institution Jato
Dynamics, in the last 4 years Fiat has been the most
environmentally-friendly brand of the top-selling main
car brands in Europe, with an average CO2 emission level
of 123.1 g/km compared to the market average of 140.9
						g/km.
						It is also important
to point out methane's strategic role for the diffusion
of renewable sources as fuel in the transport sector,
being the bridging technology for laying the foundations
to develop a solution even more ecologically
						sustainable: bio-methane. The eco-friendly solutions
offered at the Berliner event were concrete
demonstrations of Fiat's contribution to mobility which
is simultaneously sustainable and accessible for all
vehicle types: from small cars and professional vehicles
						to industrial vehicles and buses.
						Fiat and Fiat
Powertrain also took part in some important workshops
that were staged during the event Marco Verrienti,
Marketing Manager of Fiat Germany, was at the session
dedicated to the "European Challenges vs. Global
Opportunities, The Perspective of International OEMs on
CNG" topic while Andrea Gerini, Program Manager
Alternative Fuels of Fiat Powertrain and Antonio Fuganti,
Trento Branch Director Centro Ricerche Fiat, spoke at
the round table dedicated to "Biomethane: Concrete,
Affordable and Deployable-Now Solution for a Wide
						Sustainable Mobility."
						The products
						displaid
						The Fiat Qubo Natural
Power equipped with 77/70 HP 1.4 Fire Evo II bi-fuel
(Euro 5) engine which records reduced CO2 emissions
(just 114 g/km). In this way, the vehicle can be driven
in all urban areas subject to traffic restrictions
(linked to excessive pollutant emissions) and can even
be parked in multi-storey car parks. Developed with
special attention to performance and fuel consumption,
the 1.4 Fire EVO II bi-fuel engine with power of 77/70
HP (57 kW and 51 kW respectively on petrol and methane)
at 6000 rpm and a maximum torque of 11.7 kgm (115 Nm) on
petrol and 10.6 kgm (104 Nm) on methane, at 3250 rpm. So
when it is matched with a 5-speed manual gearbox, the
						Natural Power engine is brilliant
(maximum speed is 150 km/h), but at the same time it
guarantees remarkable savings: in the combined cycle, it
consumes between 6.5 and 6.4 l/100km, depending on
whether it is fuelled by petrol or methane. The Qubo Natural Power
therefore proves itself to be a winning product that
arises out of a simple yet revolutionary concept: to go
beyond the concept of an MPV toward the idea of a free
space car that is able to meet very different mobility
needs due to its strong personality and attributes of
practicality and versatility unique for its category.
						The Doblò Natural
Power is the minimum environmental impact version fitted
						with a special Euro 5 120 HP 1.4 16v Fire T-Jet bi-fuel
(petrol and methane) engine, made by Fiat Powertrain and
specifically designed for maximum integration of the two
independent petrol and methane systems (natural gas -
CNG). The Doblò Natural Power offers an excellent
compromise between performance and fuel consumption: it
is agile in traffic but at the same time brilliant on
long hauls, considerably cutting running costs in all
cases.  The Doblò Natural Power is the ideal answer for
mixed use, and reasserts Fiat's undisputed world
leadership in the field of cars with original equipment
(OEM) dual-fuel petrol/CNG engines. The Doblò Natural
Power delivers excellent performance: the maximum torque
is supplied at lower speeds (206 Nm at 2,000 rpm), the
maximum power (120 HP at 5,000 rpm) and the maximum
speed (172 km/h). This remarkable performance
corresponds to a significant reduction in fuel
						consumption and emissions: 134 g/100km of C02
and 4.9 kg/100 km of methane on the combined cycle.
						Also present on the
stand was the innovative 1.4 16v Fire T-Jet engine in
the bi-fuel CNG configuration, designed by Fiat
Powertrain from the beginning with a large number of
special features with respect to a normal petrol-only
engine. The twin shaft four-cylinder engine supercharged
by a turbocharger with intercooler is equipped with
hydraulic tappets and intake and exhaust valves with
their housings on the head made with special geometry
and materials optimised for methane operation. The
injection system has a rail/gas injector system
integrated directly on the intake manifold while the
catalytic converter has a specific design. The maximum
power of 120 HP (petrol and methane) is delivered at
5000 rpm while the maximum torque at only 2000 rpm
						reaches 206 Nm. The 1.4 16v Fire T-Jet bi-fuel CNG
fitted on the new Fiat Doblò Natural Power is the engine
that best combines respect for the environment and
						cost-effective running, without sacrificing performance:
the available high power and torque levels and the
considerable prompt response, guaranteed by the low
inertia of the turbocharger, ensure great driving
flexibility and brilliant take-off even with a full
						load.
