07.07.2011 FIAT GROUP LOSES MORE GROUND IN ITALY DURING JUNE

With the Giulietta (above) now having been on sale in Italy for more than a year, Alfa Romeo was finally stripped of its bounce and turned in a more modest 7.26 percent rise after selling 5,497 cars in June, 372 more than in the same month last year. Alfa Romeo was however the best performer from FGA for the month and its June market share climbed from 2.98 to 3.26 percent for the month, year-on-year.

Fiat Group had a steady month in Italy during June, holding its losses to 3.68 percent after selling fifty thousand cars, just undershooting the overall market which was down 1.70 percent. Alfa Romeo and Lancia ended the month on a positive note while Fiat lost more ground. However it meant the Fiat Group didn't pull back any of the ground it has lost as in June 2010 its Italian sales had plunged by 27 percent.

According to automotive industry body UNRAE a total of 168,832 new cars were sold in Italy last month and when compared to 171,753 units during the same period last year the market was almost flat (-1.70 percent). The Fiat Group weighed in with 50,341 registrations last month which was almost two thousand and 3.68 percent down on the same period last year and as a result the national carmaker's market share for the month nudged down from 30.43 to 29.82 percent year-on-year.

Splitting the Fiat Group Automobiles (FGA) brands up, Fiat Automobiles sold 36,716 cars in Italy during June, down 6.6 percent on the same month last year when it saw 39,309 sales, and as a result its market share slipped further, from 22.89 to 21.75 percent year-on-year for the month. Lancia was also positive, boosted by the showroom arrival of the new-generation Ypsilon, and it's 8,023 sales in June was up 4.28 percent 329 units on the same month last year. As a result its market share was up from 4.48 to 4.75 percent year-on-year.

Of the Fiat Group's luxury/performance brands, Ferrari sold 56 cars in June in Italy, down 34.88 percent year-on-year while Maserati's 49 units was flat on the same month last year. Jeep, which is now part of FGA, sold 770 of its trademark off roaders, a 127.14 percent rise on the same month last year when it had managed to move on 339 units. Elsewhere, Lamborghini sold 8 of its sports cars, that was flat year-on-year, while DR Auto, which assembles selected Cheryl Automobiles models in Italy from CKD kits shipped in from China; added another 250 units, up 70.07 percent year-on-year.

For the first half of the year 1,012,849 new cars have been sold in Italy, down 13.09 percent on the first six months of last year when 1,165,396 units were registered. The Fiat Group has 296,643 registrations for the half year, down more than sixty thousand units and 17.83 percent on the same period last year when the Italian carmaker had sold 360,998 units by this point. As a result the Fiat Group's market share for the first half of the year drops from 30.98 to 29.29 percent.

The Fiat brand is FGA's big loser for the first half of the year, its sales are down a quarter (-24.33 percent) and seventy thousand units on the same period last year when it had managed 279,169 registrations. As a consequence the Fiat brand's market share for the first half of the year slides from 23.95 to 20.86 percent year-on-year.

Lancia is on 47,578 units for the year-to-date, down 11.02 percent year-on-year. However Lancia has outperformed the falling overall market and as a result its first half of the year market share climbs very slightly from 4.59 to 4.70 percent year-on-year. Alfa Romeo is on 34,144 units for the year-to-date, and compared to 27,606 units during the same period last year, that is a rise of more than a third (+34.55 percent).

Elsewhere, Ferrari is on 406 cars for the half year, down 12.12 percent on the same period last year, while Maserati is on 259 units in its domestic market, down 11 percent. Of the other Italian brands, Lamborghini is on 43 units after six months, down 34.85 percent on the same period last year, while DR Auto is on 1,934 units, down a quarter (-25.76 percent). The Jeep brand is on 3,733 units for the first half of the year, up 76.67 percent on the first six months of last year. That gives Jeep a 0.37 percent share of the Italian market for the year-to-date.

The Fiat Punto was Italy's best selling car during June after 11,923 units found buyers, putting it comfortably ahead of the Panda (10,380) in second place while the 500 (7,444) made it a top three lock out for the Fiat Automobiles brand. Lancia's Ypsilon added 5,354 units in June to made it four FGA models in the top five - as well as the top ten - as the Alfa Romeo Giulietta surprisingly absented itself from the best sellers list. The Punto (4,904) was the best selling diesel model for the month of June while the 500 (2,548) and the Giulietta (2,203) in sixth and ninth place respectively completed FGA interest in the oil burning top ten.

With 71,254 units sold so far this year the Punto is Italy's best selling car in 2011, well clear of the Panda which stands on 65,320 registrations after six months. The 500 (37,710) in fourth, the Ypsilon (27,026) in sixth and the Giulietta (21,673) in tenth make it five FGA models in the top-ten. The Punto is the best-selling diesel in Italy for the year-to-date with 29,977 units specified as oil-burners while the Giulietta is the only other FGA model in the diesel top-ten in fourth place. The C-segment Alfa Romeo has 16,467 diesel sales for the year-to-date.
