The refreshed Compass, with 4,400 units sold
in August, played its part in helping Jeep's
58 percent year-on-year rise last month. The
compact SUV also posted its
fifth-consecutive monthly sales record this
year and it was up by 130 percent
year-on-year. |

Chrysler Group has
reported U.S. sales of 130,119 units, a 31 percent
increase compared with sales in August 2010 (99,611
units), and the best August sales since 2007, driven by
demand for Jeep products which were up by 58 percent
year-on-year. Chrysler Group was also up month-on-month
(112,026 units in July 2011).
Chrysler Group’s 31 percent sales increase was well
above the industry average in August; as well as
comfortably ahead of its two Detroit rivals: GM was up
18 percent and Ford by 11 percent. Models that
contributed to the Chrysler Group’s 31 percent increase
included the Chrysler 200/Sebring, Fiat 500, Jeep
Wrangler, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Dodge Durango, Dodge
Journey, and the Ram pick-up truck.
“In spite of a volatile market, Chrysler managed to
significantly outperform the industry again in August
with retail sales up 42 percent,” said Reid Bigland,
President and CEO – Dodge Brand and Head of U.S. Sales.
“Last month also represented our 17th-consecutive month
of year-over-year sales growth, and on the back of our
16 all-new or significantly-refreshed products I see
that trend easily continuing into the fall.”
Jeep sales were up 58 percent as all five Jeep range
models posted double digit year-on-year sales gains.
Jeep’s increase was the largest percentage increase of
all the Chrysler Group's brands. In leading volume terms
the Wrangler sold 12,949 units (+69 percent) last month
followed by the Grand Cherokee 11,320 units (+77
percent). The refreshed Compass (4,400 units) did its
part by posting its fifth-consecutive monthly sales
record this year, it was up by 130 percent year-on-year.
More worryingly, Fiat 500
sales in the U.S. stalled last month, with 3,106 units
being delivered to customers, compared to 3,038 units
during July. The 500 has been on sale in the U.S. since
March and is now on a total 11,088 units for the year so
far which is likely to leave the brand someway short of
its 2011 full year sales target. However the
long-awaited Stateside relaunch has been badly executed
in almost every area and more time should see sales
volumes rising.
The Chrysler brand put a very difficult first half of
the year behind it to post a 25 percent year-on-year
gain in August, driven entirely by the refreshed
200/Sebring, which more than doubled its sales to 10,861
units. The facelifted 300 continues to lag last year's
performance, as does the refreshed Town & Country. In
leading volume terms Dodge's Grand Caravan was up by
almost a third to 12,172 units in August while for Ram
its key pick-up truck was up 12 percent to 21,243 units.
Chrysler Group’s car sales increased 23 percent in
August, while the group’s pick-up truck sales were up 33
percent compared with the same month a year ago.
Chrysler Group finished the month with a 59-day supply
of inventory (294,347 units). U.S. industry sales
figures for August are projected at an estimated 12.3
million SAAR.
