Fiat
Automóveis continued to lead the Brazilian new car
market during October and a strong month saw it leading
out both the passenger car (45,263 units) and LCV
(11,868 units) segments as well as outperforming the market
year-on-year. With a total of 57,130 vehicles sold in
October Fiat also comfortably outperformed its closest
rival, Volkswagen, which finished last month on 53,694
units sold.
In total 203,351 new passenger cars were sold in Brazil
last month, down 10.9 percent year-on-year and 10.1
percent month-on-month. Fiat couldn't avoid the effects
of the falling market but driven by demand for the Uno
its 45,263 units sold in October was down 8.6
year-on-year which outperformed the overall picture and
when compared to 47,425 units sold in September that was
a month-on-month fall of 4.6 percent.
VW often outperforms Fiat amongst Brazilian passenger
car sales but its 44,997 registrations last month was
down 14.5 percent year-on-year and left it 266 units
behind Fiat. VW was also down 10.4 percent
month-on-month.
Third placed GM (41,724 units) was down 14.6 percent
year-on-year and 7.7 percent month-on-month in October
which meant that Fiat outperformed its two key Brazilian
market rivals in both year-on-year and month-on-month
terms.
Amongst Light Commercial Vehicles, Fiat retained its
usual dominant position although it took a knock last
month, 11,867 units sold, dominated as ever by the
segment-leading Strada pickup, was down 11.6 percent on
the same month last year when it sold 13,426 LCVs. That
result underperformed the overall Brazilian LCV market
for October, which at 60,399 registrations, was up 1.7
percent. Fiat was however more than three thousand units
clear of VW (8,697) and GM (8,096) last month. In
month-on-month terms amongst the LCV contenders Fiat was
down 9.1 percent (13,048 units sold in September 2011)
which outperformed the overall market (-10.4 percent)
but lagged VW (-6.1 percent) and GM (-4.6 percent) which
both also followed the overall market down.
For the year-to-date 2,162,087 new passenger cars have
been sold in Brazil, up 2.6 percent on the same ten
month period last year. Fiat Automóveis is on 487,687
cars sold for year-to-date, down 0.6 percent on the same
period last year. That just edges Fiat ahead of VW
(485,028 units, +0.8 percent) and well clear of third
placed GM (430,885 units, -4.0 percent).
In the LCV segment a total of 629,216 units have been
sold this year, up 14.7 percent on the January to
October period last year. Fiat is also up, but
underperforms the market; its 131,145 units is 9.0
percent ahead of last year's tally. VW trails a distant
second on 92,858 units but is up a fifth (+19.9 percent)
while third placed GM is up 6.6 percent over the same
period last year.
