Fiat
Group mirrored the Italian market's 9.25 percent fall
last month, it dropped 9.96 percent drop accentuated by
sharp falls for the Fiat and Alfa Romeo brands while
Lancia and Jeep ran out as the big winners. In total
132,579 new cars were sold in Italy last month according
to data released by automotive trade body UNRAE.
With 37,831 registrations during November the Fiat Group
was just over four thousand units and 9.96 percent down
on the same month last year when it shifted 42,015
units. That very slightly under performed the overall
market which meant its share for the month edged from
28.76 to 28.53 percent.
The Fiat brand was the big loser in November, as ever,
its 26,853 units last month was down 14.39 percent on
the same period last year when it had 31,366
registrations. That mean the Fiat brand's market share
for November slipped from 21.47 percent (2010) to 20.25
(2011).
Alfa Romeo was also a loser last month, in year-on-year
terms it was the sharpest faller amongst the Fiat Group
Automobiles (FGA) brands as 3,561 units last month
compared to 4,339 during November last year added up to
a fall of 17.93 percent. That fall was nearly double the
overall market's slide and meant the 'sports' brand's
share contracted from 2.97 to 2.69 percent year-on-year.
The
positives for FGA were led by Lancia which bounced up
13.2 percent year-on-year last month to 6,762 units
(from 5,983 units in November 2010) and that raised its
market share for the month by a full point to 5.10
percent. Jeep registered the biggest year-on-year rise
amongst the FGA brands, albeit on smaller volumes: 614
units sold last month was up 121.66 percent year-on-year
to give it a 0.46 percent share of the Italian market.
The Fiat Group's niche luxury/performance brands Ferrari
and Maserati both lost domestic ground during November,
the former's 18 units was down 18 percent while the
latter's 23 units was down 8 percent. Elsewhere
Lamborghini sold 2 cars while DR Motor - which assembles
selected models from China's Chery in CKD format and
optimistically hopes to revive Fiat's now-shuttered
Termini Imerese plant - sold 126 cars.
With
just one month remaining of the year, a total of
1,636,299 cars have been sold in Italy, down 10.60
percent year-on-year. The Fiat Group has 483,750
registrations for the year-to-date, down seventy five
thousand units and 13.44 percent on the same 11 month
period last year. It's market share for the year-to-date
stands at 29.56 percent. The Fiat brand has 340,150
registrations for the year-to-date, down more than
eighty thousand units and 19.25 percent on the same
period last year. Also sliding mildly is Lancia, 80,293
units for the year-to-date is marginally down on the
same period last year (-2.91 percent). Alfa Romeo's
55,094 units sold after 11 months is up 14.61 percent on
last year, while Jeep's 7,263 units is up by more than a
quarter (+26.41 percent). The Fiat brand has taken a
20.79 percent share of the market for the year-to-date
(23.61 percent YTD 2010) while Alfa Romeo has a 3.37
percent share so far this year, Lancia has taken 4.91
percent and Jeep has moved into the frame with 0.44
percent. Elsewhere Ferrari has 557 sales for the
year-to-date, down 15.61 percent, while Lancia has 393
sales, down 17.78 percent. Outside the Fiat Group
Lamborghini is on 71 units sold (-21.98 percent) and DR
Motor on 2,831 units (-31.44 percent).
The
Fiat Panda was Italy's best selling car last month with
10,154 units, comfortably ahead of the Fiat Punto
(7,609) while the new Lancia Ypsilon (4,869) and the
Fiat 500 (4,390) made it four FGA models in the
top-four. Sliding sales for the Alfa Romeo Giulietta
meant that there were no more FGA models represented in
the November top ten. For the year-to-date the Punto
(113,483) and Panda (107,229) are the top two sellers
with the 500 (57,575) in fourth, the Ypsilon (50,933) in
fifth and Giulietta (33,088) in tenth making it five FGA
models in the top ten. The Punto was also Italy's best
selling diesel car last month, with 3,516 sales in this
specification, allowing the VW Golf (2,286) to close up.
For the year-to-date the Punto is on 48,720 oil burning
sales.
In the
segments, the Panda and 500 ruled in A-segment in
November, the outgoing Panda was flat year-on-year while
the 500 lost one thousand units over the same period
last year - of its tally the niche convertible 500C
version however slumped to just 40 sales, one-sixth of
the sales that it managed in November 2010. In B-segment
the Punto and Ypsilon locked out the top two spots, and,
while the latter was up by more than a thousand units
last month thanks to the new model, the Punto is seeing
sales nose-diving, dropping by two and a half thousand
units in November year-on-year to just 7,618 units. For
the year-to-date the Punto has lost more than thirty
thousand sales compared to the same period last year.
Also on a downwards path in B-segment is the Punto-based
Alfa Romeo MiTo. No longer even remotely close to
cracking the segment top-ten, the MiTo's sales came in
at just 975 units last month compared to 1,498 during
the same period last year. The story is the same for the
year-to-date: the MiTo has 17,368 sales so far this year
compared to 24,323 during the same period in 2010.
In C-segment the Alfa
Romeo Giulietta (2,430) was pushed down to third place
last month behind the VW Golf (3,148) and Nissan Qashqai
(2,518). The Giulietta though has a robust 33,087
registrations so far this year, albeit thirteen thousand
less than the VW Golf which it never managed to make a
decent pitch for customers against. Fiat's Bravo went
missing in action once again in this segment; it has
19,084 sales for the year-to-date. In D-segment the Fiat
Freemont, the rebadged Dodge Journey R/T, added 1,371
more sales but lost its top spot to the VW Passat
(1,505). Since it has gone on sale in the summer the
Freemont has notched up 8,833 sales. In E-segment the
Jeep Grand Cherokee (264) was the fourth best seller for
the month just gone and it has 1,623 sales for the year
so far, however the new Lancia Thema (Chrysler 300
series rebadge) sold less than 101 units (the tenth best
seller for November was on 101 units) and thus couldn't
crack the top-ten. A newspaper report though this week
offers more promise, quoting the Thema as having taken
2,500 orders so far. In F-segment the Maserati
GranTurismo (17) as well as Ferrari's 458 Italia (7) and
FF (7) all cracked the top-ten. For the year-to-date the
458 Italia (260), GranTurismo (235) and Ferrari
California (187) are the seventh, eighth and ninth
best-sellers in F-segment.
Amongst the small
MPVs, the outgoing Lancia Musa (848) and its sister,
the Fiat Idea (420) both plodded to very respectable
showings, they have 14,314 and 5,496 sales respectively
for the year-to-date. In the category for large MPVs the
newly on sale Lancia Voyager (Chrysler Town & Country)
added 112 units. In Multispace, the Fiat Qubo
(864) and Fiat Doblò (424) both had solid months, while
for the year-to-date they are on 10,853 and 5,956 units
respectively; the former down nearly five thousand units
while the latter is almost flat on the same 11 month
period last year.
