Increased power through supercharging is the recipe of
Novitec Tridente, the German tuner's arm devoted to
Maserati, and after applying this technology to the
GranTurismo and Quattroporte, it is now also available
for the GranCabrio.The
GranCabrio's 4.7-litre V8 engine is upgraded with the
addition of a supercharger driven by a cogged-tooth
belt. Maximum boost pressure is limited to 0.35 bar.
Meanwhile a water-to-air intercooler with dedicated
water circuit ensures optimal power yield and healthy
engine temperatures.
The Novitec Tridente "Sport"
compressor conversion also includes a custom intake
manifold and larger injectors. Reprogrammed engine
electronics coordinate the interaction of the new
high-performance components. The new mapping programme
also aims to ensure an optimal power yield, durability
and compliance with current exhaust emission standards.
The engine conversion costs
19,900 euros and can also be used in conjunction with a
new Novitec Tridente sports exhaust system. The fully
stainless-steel system features four slanted tailpipes
with diameters of 90 millimeters and is available with
or without a control flap. The former allows the driver
to engage in sound tuning from the cockpit. Depending on
the control flaps' positioning, the eight-cylinder
engine can sound either sporty, subdued or with the
aggressive nature of a racing car.
After the supercharging
conversion the rated power of the four-valve engine
jumps by 150 hp (110 kW) to a claimed 590 hp (434 kW) at
7,300 rpm. Simultaneously peak torque grows from 490 Nm
to a claimed 572 Nm at 5,400 rpm. The uprated power
plant interacts with the standard six-speed automatic
transmission, both in manual and automatic mode: The
sports car sprints from 0 - 100 km/h in a claimed 4.5
seconds while top speed increases from the standard 283
km/h to a claimed 301 km/h.
These higher speeds place
greater demands on the aerodynamic properties of the
vehicle so the Novitec Tridente designers have developed
a number of discreet new add-on components that also fit
the GranTurismo coupé version. They aim to further
emphasise the cabriolet’s sporty character as well as
optimising its aerodynamic properties. All body
components are made from carbon fibre with either a
clear coated finish or painted in body or contrasting
colour.
The small front spoiler lips
are attached to both sides of the production front apron
with their curving shape aiming to reduce lift on the
front axle, thus further improving directional stability
at high speeds. In combination with the carbon-fiber
radiator grille surround the two new lip spoilers aim to
give the vehicle a sportier face. The rocker panel
underside trim calms the airstream along the vehicle’s
sides and gives the two-seater a longer, more sleeker
appearance. To create an optimal aerodynamic balance,
the GranCabrio can be upgraded with the a small new rear
spoiler lip and a diffuser for the standard bumper. The
tuner claims they each improve the stability of the
handling at high speeds while these two components also
aim to add a more sporty character to the rear
appearance.
The makeover continues with new
wheels and tyres with a staggered combination of 21- and
22-inch alloy wheels for front and rear further
emphasising the wedge-shaped design of the sports car.
The three-piece wheels with five double spokes are
available in any desired colour and upon request or even
coated with carbon fibre. The 9Jx21 wheels at the front
are fitted with Pirelli P Zero high-performance tyres
sized 255/30 ZR 21 while at the rear 315/25 ZR 22 tyres
on 11.5Jx22 rims provide optimal traction.
The suspension, meanwhile, has
been specifically calibrated to these high performance
tyres. This suspension lets each customer select their
individual ride height and damper settings while to
further improve the GranCabrio's everyday utility the
body can be raised hydraulically at the push of a button
by 40 millimeters on the front and rear axle. It makes
navigating speed bumps or parking garage ramps easier.
Afterwards the suspension can be lowered again to its
original position at the push of a button.
Alternatively, upon reaching a speed of 80 km/h the
suspension reverts to its original position
automatically. Finally Novitec Tridente can also
customise the interior of the Maserati GranCabrio to
suit the owner’s personal taste using leather or
Alcantara.
