Carmaker's linking up with high profile fashion labels for cosmetic makeovers of their products is a growing trend and now Maserati is clambering on this bandwagon to team up with Fendi to give the GranCabrio (known as the GranTurismo Convertible in the U.S.) a new look.

The Maserati GranCabrio Fendi has been designed by Silvia Venturini Fendi and aims to build on the "Made in Italy" concept; it will debut at the Frankfurt IAA next month.

Maserati thus joins a long list of Italian carmakers who have turned to fashion houses to give their products an extra drop of glamour, some successful, some embarrassing. Fiat teamed up with Benetton's Sisley brand for a limited edition of the first-generation Panda 4x4 which was so successful it was added to the range. Fiat later joined forces with Italian designer Alessi for a special version of the second-generation Panda. More recently Alfa Romeo joined up with Italia Independent to try to shift the stalled Brera while Fiat turned first to Diesel and then Gucci to create cosmetic tweaks for the 500. While these latter models are mildly clumsy interpretations but however popular with customers, Lamborghini's Versace-tweaked Murciélago is a co-branding exercise that is fortunately forgotten.

Now Maserati joins the cosmetic makeover party teaming up with the well known Italian handbag designer Fendi, and the resulting GranCabrio Fendi has been developed at the Trident's historical headquarters in Modena, with exclusive materials, created in various colours, used for this project.

The three-layered exterior body colour, dubbed Grigio Fiamma Fendi, is a special dark grey with an iridescent golden finish on the surface. A new wood finished trim, Pergamena Fendi, runs across the width of the dashboard in place of the usual production trim, as well as on the doors and on the top of the gear lever, all are in Fendi's trademark yellow, a theme that is carried over further on the brake calipers and in the embroidered yellow Trident logo on the headrests.

Fendi's traditional double-F pattern is stitched into the seat covering material as well as in the hub caps on the distinctive 20-inch alloy wheels and on the kick plates.

Cuoio Romano, the leather used in Fendi’s Selleria product line, has been used for such details such as the instrument cluster cover, the gear lever gaiter and for the profile of the floor mats. The project also features in a 'Limited Edition Travel Set' made up of luggage and other accessories. The GranCabrio Fendi aims to unite the art of Fatto a Mano (handmade) with the technology and power of the convertible's 4.7-litre V8 engine which is coupled to the automatic transmission.

Finally, Silvia Venturini Fendi has designed a special logo to seal this collaboration. A silver oval plaque which features an engraving of the Maserati 'Trident' badge, the Fendi logo and also a five-digit series number (five being a number apparently associated Fendi) is mounted on the dashboard in front of the passenger's seat, and on both sides of the black cloth folding roof. Lastly a special black car cover, with a ton-sur-ton double F logo, is available for the GranCabrio Fendi.
