Four drivers and three
brands emerged from the Spa-Francorchamps round of the
International Superstars Series over the weekend as the
leading forces in the nail biting race for the 2011 title, as, after
six rounds and with just two rounds remaining at Mugello
(September 25) and Vallelunga (October 9), Mercedes, Maserati
and BMW drivers' are set for a tight battle to the wire.
At the historical Belgian
venue, the Swiss Team-prepared Maserati Quattroporte of
Andrea Bertolini cruised to a sensational double win,
repeating the team's Donington honours two races ago and
trimming the Italian driver's gap to the top in
standings to just 10 points.
Luigi Ferrara, who
ended up finishing on the podium in both races at Spa, retained
the championship lead in his CAAL-run Mercedes C63 AMG,
while behind Bertolini, the two manufacturer-supported BMWs of Thomas Biagi and Alberto Cerqui stand in
third and fourth places, 36 and 43 points respectively away from the top
of the leaderboard.
In qualifying Bertolini took full advantage of his huge
experience at Spa-Francorchamps, which includes a string
of appearances in the legendary Spa 24 Hours, to clock
up a stunning pole despite the wet weather. The
four-time FIA GT Champion logged a personal best lap
time of 2:52.538 early on, and successfully defended
himself from the attacks of several rivals, including
his own team mate Alessandro Pier Guidi who wound up as
the closest challenger, more than a second back with a
best time of 2:53.556.
That left the two red, black and
white Swiss Team Quattroportes with a front row of the
grid lock-out as third
fastest time set by Luigi Ferrara (CAAL Mercedes C63 AMG)
was 1.6 seconds off Bertolini's pole time. In addition
to the inclement weather, the session was disrupted by a
red-flag brought out by a huge fire which engulfed the
Chrysler 300C of Mauro Cesari (MRT by Nocentini).
In Race 1 Bertolini
prevailed after a tough confrontation with Johnny
Herbert (Romeo Ferraris Mercedes C63 AMG), while the
Maserati pilot also had to defend himself from attacks
by points leader Ferrara. The CAAL Racing driver moved
up to second place but eventually had to settle in
behind his Maserati-powered rival and was 1.738 seconds
back at the flag, while a momentary stutter from
Herbert's engine straightened out the picture for
Bertolini. The British driver wound up standing on the
last podium spot, followed across the line by his Romeo
Ferraris team-mates Michela Cerruti and Max Pigoli, and
by reigning Champion Thomas Biagi (Team BMW Italia/BMW
M3 E92).
In Race 2, Bertolini
put together a perfect start-to-finish performance,as he
capably held onto his pole position spot and edged
Massimo Pigoli's Romeo Ferraris-run Mercedes at the
chequered flag by less than 2 seconds. Biagi, Stefano
Gabellini (Team BMW Italia) and Francesco Sini (Ferlito
Motors/Jaguar XF/R 5.0) rounded out the top-six.
Bertolini's fourth and
fifth wins of the season netted him 41 points (20 points
for the win and 1 point for pole position) at Spa and it
moves him up to 136 points, closing the gap to series
leader Ferrara down to just 10 points. The Maserati
driver making up for the last round of the season, held
at Misano in Italy, where he netted just six points from
the opening race. Ferrari meanwhile collected 28 points
at Spa. With two rounds remaining to be contested third
placed Biagi is still in the title hunt, but is now 36
points adrift and would need to rely on misfortunes for
the top two combined with strong results if he is to
make a late season tilt at the title.
