Fiat
Automóveis turned in a strong February in Brazil to
comfortably lead the market for the month, a traditional
position it holds, while it also moves it to the top spot
for the year-to-date.
In total 185,483 new passenger cars and 50,351 light
commercial vehicles were sold in Brazil last month. That
was a year-on-year fall of 8.2 percent and 11.1 percent
respectively, while in month-on-month terms it was also
a fall of 5.7 percent and 10.1 percent respectively.
Fiat turned in a strong month to lead both market
segments with a total of 55,426 cars and LCVs sold.
Second placed VW was five thousand units adrift with
50,567 sales. Third placed GM, which had upset the apple
cart with a very strong January, dropped back into more usual
territory and was over fifteen thousand units
adrift of Fiat last month.
In the segment reserved for passenger cars Fiat topped
proceedings last month with 43,393 sales which made it
narrowly the market's best seller a few hundred units ahead of VW which posted 43,138
sales. In year-on-year terms Fiat narrowly
underperformed the overall market as it was down 9.1
percent (47,740 units in February 2011) while in
month-on-month terms it was up 2.4 percent against a
falling overall market (Fiat sold 42,366 units in January 2012).
Amongst LCV sales Fiat was the clear winner in February,
it sold 12,033 units, comfortably ahead of its closest
rival VW which ended the month on 7,429 units. Much further
back, and neck-to-neck for third spot, were Ford and GM
with 4,700 and 4,585 sales respectively.
In year-on-year terms Fiat was down 7.4 percent (12,997
units in February 2011) in the LCV sector, however it outperformed the
overall market. Fiat also turned in an excellent
performance in month-on-month terms, up more than a
quarter (+26.2 percent) against January when it sold
9,535 LCVs, easily beating the overall light commerical sector which shed
a fifth of sales for the period. Second placed VW had
7,429 sales in February.
For the year-to-date Fiat now has 85,759 passenger car
and 21,568 LCV sales, up 1.3 percent and down 5.6
percent respectively on the opening two months of 2011.
