Fiat
Group Automobiles (FGA) enjoyed a mixed May in the UK,
the Fiat brand's sales surged by almost a third
year-on-year while Alfa Romeo's slid by nearly a half;
elsewhere Jeep and Maserati were both down while
Chrysler was sharply up.
In total 162,288 cars were sold in the UK last month and
that was up twelve thousand units and 7.88 percent
year-on-year. Fiat more than matched the market's
positive direction, and with 4,073 sales last month
compared to 3,104 in May 2011, it was up 31.22 percent
while its market share for the month was up from 2.06 to
2.51 percent year-on-year. The Fiat 500 squeezed its way
back into the UK top ten in tenth place for the second
consecutive month with 2,823 sales, although that result
also reflected how reliant Fiat has become on this
model.
Alfa Romeo went the other way however, its deteriorating
position saw sales down from 1,039 in May 2011 to 584
last month, a contraction of 43.79 percent which left
only Proton, on 16 units, the failed Saab brand and
Subaru as worse performers in year-on-year terms. As a
result its market share for the month fell from 0.69
percent to 0.36 percent year-on-year.
The Fiat Group's nominal brands in the UK had a mixed
month, Maserati was down by 6 units and 19.35 percent to
25 units, Abarth was flat (+1.23 percent) on 81 units,
while Jeep was down 21.50 percent to 157 units. The
Chrysler brand however was the UK's best performer in
May in year-on-year terms, up 618.92 percent, however,
that only added up to 266 units and a 0.16 percent share
of the market for the month.
After the first five months of the year 868,166 new cars
have been sold in the UK, very slightly positive on last
year (+2.56 percent). The Fiat brand has 20,807 sales
for the year-to-date, and when compared to 18,385 during
the same period last year, that is a rise of 13.17
percent. As a result of beating the market Fiat's
year-to-date market share rises by just under a quarter
of a percent to 2.40 percent.
Alfa Romeo has sold 5,500 cars so far this year in the
UK, down two thousand units and 35.82 percent
year-on-year. Its market share falls by quarter of a
point to 0.41 percent. FGA's notional brands in the UK
are mixed, Abarth is down 14.58 percent and 86 units to
504 cars, Jeep is up 19.53 percent to 967 units, while
Chrysler is up 398.03 percent to 1,265 cars, the
market's second-best performance for the year-to-date in
year-on-year terms.
