Fiat
enjoyed a real bounce in the UK last month, its sales
rising at four times the rate of the overall market
which also posted a positive result, however that uptick
didn't extend though to Alfa Romeo which lost more than
a quarter of its sales year-on-year.
In total 143,884 new cars were sold in the UK during
July and that decent result continued a recent positive
sales run for this market and was twelve thousand units
and 9.31 percent ahead of the same month last year.
The Fiat brand had a very
strong month and with 3,712 sales in July versus 2,639
units during the same period last year that added up to
a 40.66 percent rise and put it firmly amongst the big
winners in the UK for July in year-on-year terms. That
result made up for July 2011 when Fiat's UK sales fell
by more than a quarter versus July 2010 against the
backdrop an overall market that was slightly down. Last
month's performance also boosted Fiat's July market
share year-on-year by half a percentage point to 2.58
percent.
Alfa Romeo however continues to suffer sharply falling
sales in the UK and it missed out on the market bounce,
it managed to sell 496 cars last month, two hundred less
than July 2011 and that was a fall of 28.53 percent and
reduced its market share for the month, from 0.53
percent in 2011, to 0.34 percent in 2012. It also gave
up most of the gains Alfa Romeo made in July 2011 when
it climbed by a third versus July 2010.
The Fiat Group's niche brands, bar Chrysler, also failed
to capitalise on the market's positive month. Abarth
shifted just 69 cars, a decline of 19.77 percent; the
Scorpion took a 0.05 percent share of the market for
July. Meanwhile Maserati lost two thirds of its sales to
finish July on 15 units; that was a fall of 65.91
percent and 29 units.
The Chrysler brand however was up 696.23 percent, the
best-year-on-year performance during July in the UK, to
422 units, which gave it a 0.29 percent share of the
month's sales. The other Chrysler Group brand, Jeep,
however couldn't follow the market upwards though, it
fell 9.29 percent to 127 units and took a 0.09 percent
share of all sales for the month.
For the year-to-date 1,201,564 new cars have been sold
in the UK, up forty thousand units and 3.47 percent on
the same period last year. The Fiat brand has 29,197
sales so far this year and when compared to 25,765
during the opening seven months of 2011 that adds up to
a 13.32 percent year-on-year rise. As a result of
outperforming the overall market Fiat's year-to-date
share rises from 2.22 percent in 2011 to 2.43 percent in
2012.
Alfa Romeo is struggling this year compared to 2011 and
has 4,654 registrations for the year-to-date and when
compared to 7,182 during the same period last year that
is a fall of 35.20 percent. That leaves Alfa Romeo as
one of the worst performers so far in 2012 in
year-on-year terms while its market share for the
year-to-date contracts from 0.62 percent last year to
0.39 percent this year.
Abarth has 676 registrations for the year-to-date, down
104 units and 13.33 percent on the same period last year
while the Scorpion's market share for the period dips
0.01 percent to 0.06 percent. Maserati has sold 186 cars
in the UK so far this year and when compared to 257
during the same seven month period last year it adds up
to a fall of just over a quarter (-27.63 percent).
The Chrysler Group brands are both positive for the
year-to-date and ahead of the market, the Chrysler brand
has 2,028 sales, up 454.10 percent, the best
year-on-year performance in the UK this year, while Jeep
is on 1,308 sales and up 10.19 percent.
