Touring
Superleggera has shown first images of its new Geneva
bound concept which follows the current trend of
reinterpreting historical icons, this time it is Alfa
Romeo's legendary Disco Volante that comes under the
						spotlight.
					This
year at the 82nd Geneva Motor Show the students of the
IED school in Turin are also reimagining a legend, their
choice however is the Cisitalia 202. But for Touring
there is quite a neat twist in its choice as the
original company designed the Disco Volante ("flying
						saucer") exactly six decades ago.
						At the start of the
1950s, Touring had devised one of their most well know
projects, the Disco Volante. Designed for motorsport,
there were three versions, a spider appeared first in
						1952, followed by a coupé and a 'narrow-waisted' spider
in 1953 (one example was built of each). The Disco
Volante was powered by an all-alloy 1997.4cc dohc four
cylinder unit which produced 158 bhp at 6,500 rpm. The
mechanicals were based on Alfa Romeo's production 1900.
The chassis was a tubular frame with a wheelbase of
						2220mm.
						The
images show a mix of modern styling with a swathe of
cues drawn from the original design and updated.
						Little technical
detail has emerged of the new project but it is based on
the Alfa Romeo 8C Competizione and mechanically it
appears unchanged with the same 450 CV and 480 Nm 4.7
litre V8 engine under the bonnet as well as riding on
						the same alloy wheels.
