07.01.2013 FIAT GROUP AUTOMOBILES ENDS YEAR IN GERMANY ON SLUGGISH NOTE

FIAT PANDA 2012

The Fiat brand added 4,419 sales in Germany last month, a fall of 8.1 percent year-on-year, which was however half the rate of the overall market's fall and allowed it to take a 2.2 percent share of sales for the month.

The German new car market took a hit during the final month of last year and it was the same story for the Fiat Group Automobiles (FGA) brands as Fiat, Alfa Romeo and Lancia all saw their sales for December decline.

In total 204,331 new passenger cars were sold in Germany during December, a sharp fall of 16.4 percent on the same month last year which was also well below the market's overall - flat - direction throughout 2012.

The Fiat brand added 4,419 sales in Germany last month, a fall of 8.1 percent year-on-year, which was however half the rate of the overall market's fall and allowed it to take a 2.2 percent share of sales for the month.

There was little success for the niche brands in December, however, as Alfa Romeo lost a third of its sales year-on-year (-33.9 percent) after selling only 415 cars while it was worse for Lancia as its sales slumped by two-thirds (-66.4 percent) to 145 cars. That left Lancia as the worst performing brand in Germany last month in year-on-year terms if Daihatsu, which is being wound out of the market, is discounted.

Finally in December the Chrysler Group added 481 units, up 29.6 percent year-on-year. While data isn't broken down by brand all, or almost all sales, would be attributable to the Jeep brand.

For the full year of 2012, a total of 3,082,504 new cars were sold in Germany, down 2.9 percent when compared to 2011.

Fiat brand sold 72,755 cars in 2012, down 9.2 percent on 2011, to take a 2.4 percent share of the market. Alfa Romeo was FGA's biggest loser last year in volume terms, dropping more than a quarter (-28.4 percent) to 7,502 units. That reduced Alfa Romeo's German market share to just 0.2 percent.

Lancia ended the year on a positive note, although that upwards momentum was reversed before the end of the year had arrived. However, its presence is only token and 2,979 cars sold in 2012 added up to a 0.1 percent market share.

Finally, Chrysler Group accounted for 7,033 sales in Germany last year, most would be attributed to the Jeep brand.
