The Brazilian new passenger car market saw a relatively flat June for sales and Fiat Chrysler Automóveis Brasil (FCA) mirrored that direction although the Fiat brand continued to underperform and lost 12.5% of its sales year-on-year.
In total 163,413 new passenger cars were sold across Brazil last month which was up a couple of thousand units and 1.4% on the same month last year.
FCA sold 23,858 units in Brazil during June, which was down 1.4% year-on-year, and that positioned it as usual as the second best-selling passenger car brand on Latin American’s largest market, behind GM, which sold 28,244 units, but just ahead of Volkswagen, which finished June on 23,697 units.
That total for FCA split up to 15,074 units for the Fiat brand, which was down 12.5% year-on-year, and 8,739 units for Jeep, which was up 27.2%, year-on-year.
After a strong first half of the year despite being flat last month the Brazilian new passenger car sector is on 957,936 units, up one hundred and ten thousand units and 13% on the same period last year.
FCA is on 131,482 units for the year-to-date and is up almost eleven thousand units and 8.9% on the same period last year albeit it has underperformed the overall market.
The Fiat brand is on 81,495 units for the year-to-date, up 1.7% on the same period last year, while Jeep is on 49,775 units and is up 23.3%.
In the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) sector the market was up last month as 31,744 units sold represented a rise of 17.9% when compared to June of last year while there was better news here for the Fiat brand which beat the market as it climbed 18.2% to 12,356 units to continue to dominate the segment.
Fiat's closest rival amongst the brands selling LCVs in Brazil during June was Volkswagen, which sold 5,225 units, and then GM and Toyota, which sold 4,181 and 2,980 units, respectively.
For the year-to-date the LCV sector in Brazil is up a very healthy 17.9% at 169,968 units and Fiat mirrors this uptick, it’s up 18.2% to 64,881 units to comfortably lead the sector, more than double the volumes that Volkswagen has achieved thus far.
