The Brazilian new passenger car market surged during July, gaining 15.9% year-on-year, and although Fiat Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) was up ten percent the Fiat brand however lagged to end the month flat and lose share.
In total 175,856 new passenger cars were sold in Brazil last month and that represented a gain of nearly twenty five thousand units on the same month last year.
FCA weighed in with 24,620 units sold last month, up two thousand three hundred units and 10.2% on July last year.
That preference pushed FCA down into and uncharacteristic third place behind usual Brazilian market leader GM (31,043 units) but allowed Volkswagen into second place, the German brand up 37.7% to 26,163 units
Fiat shifted 15,154 cars last month which was up two hundred and fifty units and 1.7% but that missed the market's surge and as a result shrank the Italian brand’s share of the market. Jeep was however up 28.1% to 9,434 units.
For the year-to-date the Brazilian new passenger car market is up a robust 13.4% to 1,133,796 units a rise of one hundred and thirty four thousand units when compared to the same seven month period last year.
FCA is on 156,106 units for the year-to-date, up thirteen thousand units and 9.1% but underperforming the overall market.
The Fiat brand is on 96,649 units for the year so far which is up 1.7% on the first seven months of last year. Jeep meanwhile is on 59,210 units for the year-to-date and up 24.1% year-on-year.
The picture was much better for Fiat in the Light Commercial Vehicle (LCV) sector as its 13,086 units registered in July was up 33.5% and more than three thousand units year-on-year and beat the overall LCV segment which was up 21.6% to 32,965 units.
Fiat continued to dominate amongst LCVs with its closest rival Volkswagen shifting 5,265 units last month.
For the year-to-date the Brazilian LCV segment has passed the two hundred thousand mark and is on 202,931 units – that’s up more than thirty thousand units and 18.5% on the same period last year.
The Fiat brand is up 20.5% to 77,972 units for the year-to-date in the LCV sector, that's a gain of thirteen thousand units when compared to the first seven months of last year.
It's also put on more than double the sales its closest rival, Volkswagen, has generated so far this year as the German brand is on 35,428 units for the year-to-date. GM is the third best-selling brand for the year-to-date, on 24,749 units, while Toyota is fourth on 20,545.
