Fiat Chrysler Automobiles’ (FCA) key brands in Germany turned in a mixed July performance as while Fiat ended up slightly positive but still missed out on the market's double-digit surge, Alfa Romeo really suffered and shed a third of its sales year-on-year.

In total 317,848 new passenger cars were sold in Germany last month and that provided the market with a big boost as it represented a 12.3% hike when compared to July of last year.

The Fiat brand, with 7,288 sales, put in a positive month in year-on-year terms, up 2.3% on July last year but it wasn't able to mirror the market’s uptick.

However, any black ink is very welcome news for the troubled Italian volume brand and that helped it peg back some of its losses for the year. That performance gave Fiat a 2.3% share of the market for the month just gone.

There was no good news for Alfa Romeo as it sunk 33.7% to 485 units to take a 0.2% share of the market for July. That left Alfa Romeo as the third worst performing brand in Germany for July in year-on-year terms, behind only British off-road focused brand Land Rover and U.S. electric car maker Tesla, both of which saw their sales cut in half.

Finally, for FCA the Jeep brand’s sales were up 43% to 1,404 units last month.

For the year-to-date 2,156,879 new passenger cars have been sold in Germany and July's bumper month has given Europe's biggest market a timely boost it's now up 4.2% when compared with the first seven months of last year.

Fiat has lost a lot of ground in Germany this year and it's down 7.4% to 53,781 units after the first seven months. Fiat's year-to-date share of all sales on this market now stands at 2.5%.

Alfa Romeo’s dreadful July has tipped it negative for the year-to-date and it's down 2% to 3,781 units after seven months with a 0.2% share of all sales. Finally, for FCA Jeep is up 22.2% to 9,710 units for the year-to-date.
