Abarth’s line up at the 88th Geneva Motor Show, which has opened to the media this morning and will open to the public the day after tomorrow, is being led out by a new range topping special edition version of its sportscar model, that's been dubbed the 124 GT.
With the new 124 GT, Abarth seeks to give the car “two personalities”, that of a coupé and roadster, in a special series version that will feature an exclusive Alpi Orientali Grey livery.
The Abarth 124 GT offers the convenience of an easy-to-operate manual soft top combined with the advantages of a light-weight and safe technical hard top which will be made entirely made of carbon fibre.
This new special series will offer, in addition to all the usual features of the Abarth 124 Spider, 17-inch OZ Ultra-Light alloy rims, which are around 3 kgs lighter than the standard wheels, to improve handling as well as offering a sportier design.
The door mirror caps will be finished in a gun metal colour that matches the front spoiler treatment while a matte black bonnet will also be an optional extra. This bonnet finish is designed to be a clear reference point to the classic Abarth 124 Rally on which this solution was adopted to prevent rally crews from being dazzled by the sun.
A carbon fibre rear spoiler and hard top are also optional extras on the 124 GT while the door mirror caps can be either be specified in carbon fibre or painted red.
The carbon fibre hard top, lined on the inside, has a large rear window and efficient defroster to clear it in less than three minutes. The hard-top weighs just 16 kilograms and contributes to improving the compactness and overall torsional rigidity of the car.
It offers thermal insulation and soundproofing, while ensuring the driver has a rear view. Importantly, it can be removed and refitted in a few very easy steps. This means being able to switch from open-air thrills to the bold grand-tourer-style, which has always been a key part of the Abarth brand, in a few minutes.
The Abarth 124 GT will come with the model range’s usual four-cylinder 1.4-litre MultiAir turbo engine which delivers 170 hp (124 hp per litre) and 250 Nm of torque. It has a top speed of 232 km/h and covers 0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds.
That engine is available with a six-speed manual or automatic Sports Sequential Esseesse gearbox while the 124 GT comes with the Record Monza exhaust with dual mode system capable of modifying the path of the exhaust gas according to engine rpm and of generating a deep roar.
