new models:  Maserati Coupe GT & Cambiocorsa

Maserati Coupe

The new Maserati Coupe made its debut at the North American Motor Show earlier this year, emphasising that Maserati are aiming this car primarily at the US market, along with its sister Spyder version.

The Coupe replaces the 3200GT coupe, and although visually very similar to the old car, underneath it is basically the new Spyder with a roof fitted. Outwardly the new Coupe, its styling tweaked by Guigaro, is easily identifiable by its Spyder sourced large square-shaped rear light clusters, and the bonnet has a more pronounced bulge to house its new, larger engine.

Underneath though, it has a completely new powertrain and is built on the new Spyder's floorpan. The engine is a new unit designed and built by Ferrari at Maranello, a 4244cc V8 unit with four valves per cylinder, variable valve timing on the inlet valves and produces 390 bhp at 7000 rpm, giveing the Coupe a top speed of 285 km/h and a 0-100 acceleration time of 4.9 seconds, which is quite impressive for a car that weights in at a heavy 1670kg.

The transmission has been relocated to the rear to form a single unit with the differential, optimising the Coupe's weight distribution. It comes with option of conventional six-speed gearbox or on the Cambiocorsa performance version an F1-style unit with steering wheel paddles and hydraulic actuators.

The suspension arms are cast in forged aluminium to reduce the unsprung weight as far as possible and features anti-dive and anti-squat geometry setup. The Skyhook automatic damping control system, manufacturered Mannesmann-Sachs for Maserati, first seen on the Spyder, is an option. The Skyhook electronic damping system uses six acceleration sensors to detect the driving and road surface conditions, and then electronically self-adjusts the dampers to suit the road conditions, responding 10 times faster to inputs than conventional electronic damping systems. The system comes with two setting options, normal or sports.
