Alfa Romeo has revealed
its new Alfa 156 with a new 2.0-litre direct injection petrol engine known
as the JTS (Jet Thrust Stoichiometric).
This is the first engine
of its type, it features greater power and higher torque, and guarantees
the same performance as a 2.3-litre unit, yet consumes 10 per cent less
fuel. Fuel consumption is reduced by adopting a stratified charge lean
burn system at speeds of up to 1500 rpm. Above this threshold, the engine
harnesses all the engine’s power to increase performance.
Adding the direct ignition
system to the cylinder head, has involved removing of one spark plugs,
meaning the JTS engine is not available in classic 'TwinSpark' mode.
Unlike other lean burn engines,
the new unit is fitted with a normal catalytic converter and can use the
normal unleaded fuel on sale today instead of low sulphur fuel. |
