30.05.2003  INTRODUCTION OF DIESEL OPTIONS BOOST FIAT INDIA SALES

The introduction of diesels engines to Fiat India's range is expected to see sales climb rapidly, with a year end target of 42,000 units believed to be achievable, a figure that would be up almost 30% on last year's total of 32,111.

Fiat India Pvt Ltd, 97% owned by Fiat Spa, was formed in India in 1997 and has to date invested around US$500 million, to produce the 'World Car' Palio in hatchback, Adventure and Weekend variants, and the Siena saloon. The Palio was launched onto the Indian market in the autumn of 2001 and after initially seeing sales of around 4,000 units per month demand dwindled by almost three quarters by the end of last year.

With diesel fuel a third cheaper than petrol, Fiat launched four 1.9-litre diesel versions of the Palio in March and has seen strong uptake of the models.
