06.04.2003 BOTH FERRARIS RETIRED IN INCIDENT FILLED BRAZILIAN GRAND PRIX
RACE
Kimi Raikkonen was awarded the incident strewn Brazilian Grand Prix when it was stopped on lap 56 after a major accident involving Fernando Alonso. Although Giancarlo Fisichella was leading at the time, the result was based on the positions at the end of the previous lap and the Italian was denied his maiden Grand Prix victory at the Jordan team's 200th race. Also feeling robbed was David Coulthard who was controlling the race, but stopped on lap 52 for fresh fuel and tyres, and as the carnage unfolded was sitting in fourth position. And Rubens Barrichello. He had started slowly, working his way up the field to take the lead on lap 45 to the delight of the Brazilian crowd. But just two laps later his jinx struck, the Ferrari's engine shut down and he recorded his ninth consecutive Brazilian Grand Prix retirement. The race had started behind the safety car, which dragged the field round until lap eight. Once underway the atrocious conditions saw water running over the track surface, particularly at turn three, the Curva do Sol, which saw six cars spin off, including World Champion Michael Scumacher and both the Minardis. The safety car was deployed a further three times during the race before Alonso's smash brought proceedings to a close. |
