03.02.2003  RISI COMPETIZIONE FERRARI 360GT TAKES SECOND PLACE AT DAYTONA 24 HOURS

The no20 JMB Racing Team USA Ferrari 360GT survived to come home 14th overall at the 2003 Daytona 24 HoursRisi Competizione's Ferrari 360GT came home second overall after a strong final six hours in the Rolex 24 at Daytona, despite an electrical problem that hampered progress. Ralf Kelleners moved into second in the GT class and third overall during his double stint in the team's Ferrari 360GT. Anthony Lazzaro drove the closing two and a half hours, stroking the car home to second in class and second overall. In an attrition hit race GT class cars completed a clean sweep, the second place Risi car eventually finishing nine laps down on the winning Racers Group Porsche 911GT3 RS, and two laps ahead of the similar Rennworks Motorsport Porsche. The next Ferrari across the line in 11th overall was the Ferri 360GT of Justin Keen, Eric van de Poele and ex-F1 driver Mauro Baldi. Despite their best efforts, they were unable to overcome the deficit created by earlier problems and settled for 5th in class, while three places further back came the JMB Racing USA car of Emmanuel Collard, CART star Max Papis, regular FIA GT driver Andrea Garbagnati and Brazilian Augusto Farfus.

Five Ferrari 360GT's entered the legendary 24 hour race, JMB Racing's new US offshoot entered two cars, with one each from Risi, Ferri Competizione and the reigning GrandAm GT Champions, Scuderia Ferrari Of Washington. Qualifying had seen the Risi Competizione Ferrari line up in 17th on the grid, one place ahead of the Scuderia Ferrari of Washington 360GT, with Ferri Competizione in 23rd. Further back the JMB Racing USA cars settled for 31st and 35th.

DRIVER QUOTES

Ralf Kelleners "It was quite unexpected to finish second overall. We were hoping to have a podium finish in the GT class, but we didn't know that would mean we would also be on the overall podium. We didn't have a trouble-free race. We had some problems which were never going to cost us the race; we could always continue again after a couple of small repairs."

Anthony Lazzaro "It was an up-and-down race - we had problems, we had adversity, we came back. At some points during the night, I never thought we'd be second overall. The result is good, but you're always disappointed if you don't win. Giuseppe Risi and the whole Risi Competizione crew just did an outstanding job. Calpont have been on the podium every time they've been on the car, but they've never been on the top step yet, so that's what we have to do - bring them to the top step."

Johnny Mowlem "Most of me is 100 per cent delighted and part of me, as always, is thinking, 'Wouldn't it be nice to win a Rolex?' I would have taken this [second place] on Friday, let alone after the first hour [of the race] when Ralf had all those problems. The team did a fantastic job to make sure it all came together and they deserve it."

Mauro Baldi "Except for the small problem we had with the accident, everything went reall well. This car came at the last moment, but it was professionally prepared. We had the potential to be in a very good position, but we were not very lucky. I'm happy we did finish because we could have stopped after the accident, but this is a team that everyone has a passion to be part of. I was very proud to be part of it."
