VELOQX
PRODRIVE RACING TAKE 2ND IN GTS
A race of attrition and some
good, hard competition on the track benefited the Veloqx Prodrive Racing
team today as 2nd place in the GTS class was claimed by the Prodrive Ferrari
550 GTS Maranello of Kelvin Burt, Anthony Davidson and Darren Turner. The
Britons overcame brake problems early in the race and the loss of Kelvin
Burt through illness towards the last quarter of the event to take second
place on the podium place behind the Corvette of Johnny O'Connell, Ron
Fellows and Franck Freon.
The second car of the Care
Racing supported team, driven by Jamie Davies, Tomas Enge and Peter Kox,
did not enjoy such good fortune. The car was retired at 7.20pm with a terminal
clutch problem. They had been running in a strong 3rd place in class and
were working towards challenging for second when the problem arose.
Kelvin Burt: "I wish I felt
better so I could enjoy our 2nd place a bit more. I started feeling nauseous
early this afternoon and it got worse and worse so I went to see the circuit
doctor who diagnosed a stomach virus. My last stint finished about 7pm,
and up until then I'd really enjoyed the whole event, despite the problems
we had with our car. "
Anthony Davidson: "It was
a lot cooler tonight than during the day and I could do a lot longer stint.
It's more fun driving at night, I feel - although I'm a bit too low in
the car and I can't see properly. I can't believe that I was in the car
for nearly two hours and didn't get one clear lap! At the beginning of
the day I was really annoyed that we had slipped back so much, and in the
early stages our greenness as a driving team showed, but I'm amazed at
how quickly it all turns around and here we are in 2nd place in class.
It's a shame our second car isn't here too but good news for the Veloqx
Prodrive team.
Darren Turner: "I'm happy
it's over and we got to the podium which is a good result considering that
none of us [Burt, Davidson and Turner] had been here before and everything
didn't exactly go our way. We made a few errors, the drivers and in our
pit stops, but overall we were still there at the end so a good result."
Tomas Enge: "It's a shame
as I think we could have had points for 3rd which we were in at the time.
It's going to be very hard if we do the whole Championship to catch up
with Corvette as they have already pulled out a good lead. The Championship
is long but I'm disappointed as we wanted to really do well here. The start
of the race was good for us but we still have to improve on some areas
and it will be better in time for the next race."
Jamie Davies: "When I first
went out the grip of the car felt good and it was fine but after about
five laps I heard a noise and thought it might be the engine but there
were no alarms showing so I carried on. As I carried on, I thought I was
imagining it, but it felt as though the car was going fractionally slower
on the straights. I couldn't understand it because I was pushing quite
hard in the cooler conditions, attacking in the corners and the car felt
good, but the laps times just weren't there. Towards the end, as I was
coming out of the hairpin, the car jumped and the clutch jarred and started
slipping and it just got worse. That was the end basically."
Peter Kox: "I'm very disappointed
because at the end of the day I led the class in my first stint and then
we had the problem with the air intake. That dropped us back but I pushed
really hard in my next stint and managed to gain back a lap from the Corvettes.
Unfortunately that wasn't enough and I thought we would at least be able
to get the car to the end but that wasn't to be. Very disappointing."
George Howard-Chappell, Team
Principal: "I'm pretty happy really. If you'd said we could get second
place in the first couple of hours, when we were having a few problems,
I wouldn't have believed you. Obviously we came here to win and we didn't
do so, but we learnt a lot. There were a few things which came up on the
car which we hadn't seen before which was a surprise considering the amount
of durability testing we'd done. However, we've got to be realistic about
it, fix those things and do some more testing before Le Mans. That's the
really big one that we are all aiming for." |
