06.03.2003  MASERATI WIN FIRST COMPETITIVE RACE ON MOTORSPORT COMEBACK

The world premiere of the factory developed and built Maserati Trofeo racecar finished in glory with the number 28 of Rod Wilson winning its class in the first round of the Nations Cup, a support event for the Australian Grand Prix, Rod Wilson’s Trofeo finished sixth overall and first in class. The car is based on the Coupé and the race marked the return to competition of the Trident marque.

The Maserati Motorsport Manager and lead pilot for the Australian Grand Prix support race won over more favoured competitors hailing from other European stables. The Trident Racing Trofeo won Group 2 of the Cleanevent Nations Cup in Race 1 after a hard fought battle with a swaggle of Ferrari 360 Challenges and Porsche 911 GT3 Cups.

A second car entered by Trident Racing, with V8 Brutes star Gary Young at the wheel, also completed the ten lap race, finishing sixth in class and eleventh overall. Victory went to Peter Brock in a Holden, followed home by Russell (Chrysler Viper) and Newman (Lamborghini Diablo).

Maserati Australia General Manager, Herbert Appleroth said "It's an honour just to have the very first Maserati Trofeo's on Australian soil, let alone to take a maiden race victory in the famous Trident cars. For Maserati started it's racing campaign in 1926 with the famous Tipo 26, where it also took it's maiden victory on it's first outing; and who can forget Stirling Moss' memorable victory back in the 1956 Australian Grand Prix at the wheel of the all-conquering Maserati 250F. It is a great start for Trident Racing and for Maserati's long awaited return to international sportscar racing".
