LEWIS TO DRIVE FERRARI AT LE MANS
Two-time 24 Hours of Le Mans starter Shane Lewis will return to the French classic to drive the Le Mans Grand Touring (LM GT)-class No95 ACEMCO Automotive Ferrari 360 Modena for ACEMCO Motorsports. The Jupiter, Florida-resident has driven in 16 24-hour races in his career but never in a Ferrari. ACEMCO Motorsports owner Jeff Giangrande signed Lewis to drive in the team's Le Mans debut after Lewis impressed the team at the American Le Mans Series (ALMS) season-opening 12 Hours of Sebring in March. Lewis, a seven-time Sebring starter, was asked to step-in for the team's regular driver at the last minute when that driver was too ill to compete. Despite never having driven a 360 Modena, which has a unique steering wheel-mounted paddle gear shifting mechanism, Lewis immediately turned lap times competitive with his teammates. Lewis will co-drive with sports car standout and two-time Le Mans starter Butch Leitzinger. The third driver will be announced soon. The world's most famous sports car race will be run at the Circuit des 24 Heures on June 14-15th. "As a kid I dreamed of racing at Le Mans and in the dream I was always in the fastest, most beautiful and most passionate car in the world, a Ferrari. So, going to Le Mans with ACEMCO is literally a dream come true for me," offered Lewis while making preparations to attend the Le Mans pre-test on May 4th. "Jeff has put together an amazing program in just a few short years and, combining that with Risi, Yokohama and Butch, it's pretty easy to understand why I am eager to get to France." The No95 ACEMCO Ferrari's entry comes from an association with longtime Ferrari-entrant, Risi Competizione who will field the No94 360 Modena at Le Mans. Lewis has one LM P 900-class start (1999) and one LM GT-class start (2000) and was scheduled to return in 2001 before an injury sidelined him. Shane Lewis is the 1998 Professional Sports Car Racing Rising Star award winner and is a multiple race winner in IMSA, SCCA Pro and Grand-Am sanctioned events. He has raced in six 24 Hours of Daytona, six 12 Hours of Sebring and four Petit Le Mans. Lewis, a regular top-five finisher in ALMS competition, has earned ALMS podium finishes at Silverstone, the Nurburgring and Portland and is one of the few drivers with experience in the four major classes of international sports car racing (LM P 900, LM P 675, LM GTS and LM GT). |
