07.04.2003  FIA GT CHAMPIONSHIP ROUND 1: A WINNING DEBUT FOR MATTEO BOBBI IN BARCELONA

A WINNING DEBUT FOR MATTEO BOBBI IN BARCELONA

In a category that was foreign to him till a few months ago, Matteo Bobbi made winning debut. BMS Scuderia Italia had decided that Matteo would participate in the second qualifying session on Saturday and would compete in the second hour of the Barcelona race on Sunday.
It was up to Matteo’s team-mate Thomas Biagi  to try to win the pole position. Seeing that the conditions of the race track were more favourable in the morning and thus allowing the drivers to go faster, Biagi managed to set the third best time. In the afternoon session, with a tank full of fuel and old tyres Bobbi proved to be the fastest on the track. During Sunday’s race, Matteo overtook his adversary that decisively led him and his team-mate to win the first race of the season.

“After the free practice session on Friday, I participated in the second qualifying session on  Saturday which left me very satisfied with my time; I had the best time that afternoon. During the race, Thomas hand the car over to me when he was in second place. At that point I was determined to attack Cappellari and to inherit the lead. After I had overtaken him, I accumulated 12 seconds of advantage that Thomas kept till the end. I’m enthusiast about the victory but I know that we have to keep our feet on the ground. The championship will be long but we started off on the right foot.”
