29.05.2003 TEAM MARANELLO CONCESSIONAIRES ANNOUNCE GUY SMITH AS SIXTH DRIVER FOR SPA 24 HOURS
TMC IS DELIGHTED ANNOUNCE
THAT GUY SMITH WILL BE JOINING THE TEAM FOR THE 24 HOUR RACE AT SPA FRANCORCHAMPS
OVER THE WEEKEND OF 26/27 JULY.
Looking ahead to round six of the FIA GT Championship, Team Maranello Concessionaires has secured the services of renowned British talent and endurance racer, Guy Smith. Smith will join Andrew Kirkaldy in support of TMC’s two Ferrari 360 N/GT race cars driven by Jamie Davies and Tim Mullen (car 88), and Kelvin Burt and Darren Turner (car 89). The driver line-up for each car will be decided in due course. 28 year old Guy Smith from Beverley, Yorkshire, began his career in karts some 16 years ago. Highlights include a succession of victories in the Formula Renault Sport Championship and a win in his debut race in the 1996 British Formula 3 Championship. A number of years of single-seat experience followed, including an invitation to test Damon Hill’s Williams-Renault F1 car in 1995. Several seasons endurance racing in the USA captured the attention of Team Bentley, with whom Guy has been contracted to partner Tom Kristensen and Dindo Capello in this year’s 24 Hours of Le Mans. Guy Smith: “Having driven in so many great endurance races including the Daytona 24 Hours, the Sebring 12 Hours, the Monza 1,000 Kms and the 24 Hours of Le Mans, an opportunity to drive in the 24 Hours of Spa is a personal goal for me. Having witnessed what TMC has achieved in the FIA GT Championship in such a short period of time, I’m confident that joining the team will place me in the best possible position to secure victory in class at Spa next month.” “This is a dream line-up for us,” commented Rod Benoist, TMC’s Team Manager. “Spa is the most important race of the season as double points are available. To have six of the very best of British talent on board provides us with an excellent opportunity to strengthen our position in both the Drivers’ and Team Championships. I am absolutely confident that Guy and Andrew will make a significant contribution to the team’s efforts. Guy’s Le Mans experience especially, will undoubtedly prove invaluable.” |
