17.06.2003  80TH LE MANS 24 HOURS: JMB RACING RACE REPORT

two and a half hours spent in the pits with electrical problems dented JMB Racing's challenge for GT class honours with their Ferrari 360 ModenaFor its fifth participation in the 24 hours of le Mans, the JMB Racing team was well intentioned to ward off fate, which has pursued the team at the Le Mans race track and which made them abandon the 24 hour race in earlier editions.

Peak in a rather full racing calendar (World Championship FIA GT, Italian GT Championship, and French GT Championship), the 24 Hours of Le Mans approached by the JMB Racing team with the experience and necessary know-how: the later lined up a team drawn from the pond of GT FIA (D. Terrien, F. Babini & F. de Simone), as well as a technical team educated by endurance races.

Therefore during the first qualifying session, priority was given to the research of a stable car with a good set up, to the priority of performance. Only bad luck interfered during the second night of qualifying. Indeed, the drivers did not get the opportunity to test the set-ups and to set a good lap-time, because of a blow-out at high speed (270 km/h) which destroyed a part of the rear wing of the Ferrari 360 Modena car, requiring a repair too important to intend qualifying in good conditions.

This misfortune did not affect in any way the enthusiasm of the JMB Racing 'troops' who in spite of a start at the back of the starting grid, far from its usual level of performance, attacked this mythical race with the greatest ambitions.

Justified ambitions, since David Terrien, responsible for a perfect first stint, achieved to join the first positions of the GT classification. Followed the double stints of Fabrizio de Simone and Fabio Babini after which the 360 Modena car of the JMB Racing team was in 4th position gaining at that moment 3 seconds per lap on its closest competitor.

However, the sunny interval does not last and for a moment we could believe that fate, which had pursued the JMB Racing team during the earlier editions of the 24 hours of Le Mans, had decided to interfere again. In the middle of the night, the Ferrari 360 Modena car N° 70 had big gearbox problems, which made the car stay for two hours and fifteen minutes in its garage.

After hard labour of the mechanics of the JMB Racing team in the surrounding clamminess, consequence of an extremely warm week in the province of Sarthe, the car started again in 11th position after the repairs, but again the drivers of the JMB Racing team continued their extraordinary efforts during these very difficult weather conditions.

At the end the JMB Racing team achieved the 7th position in the GT classification, surely far from the potential the car promised, but satisfied of the level of competition of its car in such an important race as the 24 hours of le Mans and of its gained reliability.

The JMB Racing team awaits the next big classical endurance race, which are the 24 hours of Spa on July 26 and 27, in order to hit back. Until then, the JMB Racing team will try to consolidate its advantage in the World Championship FIA GT-N at Donington during the 5th race at June 25.
