27.07.2003 PROXIMUS 24 HOURS OF SPA: BMS SCUDERIA ITALIA RACE REPORT
The BMS Scuderia Italia
team won the GT category of the Spa 24-hours, the sixth round of the FIA
GT Championship, today. Enzo Calderari, Lilian Bryner, Fabrizio Gollin
and Luca Cappellari drove their Ferrari 550 Maranello to second position
overall, and closed the gap at the head of the championship to just 11
points. Their team-mates and championship leaders Matteo Bobbi and Thomas
Biagi, who drove at Spa with Stefano Livio and Ettore Bonaldi, retired
from the event in the fifth hour of the race with an engine problem.
Lilian Bryner was given the honour of crossing the line after 24-hours of hard racing, through heavy rain on Saturday night that claimed the fortunes of many competitors and intermittent drizzle through Sunday morning. The Swiss lady driver pulled into the pits with seven minutes to go to have the team investigate what turned out to be a leaking radiator. "We were lucky that happened at the end of the race, and that we were able to finish," said Bryner. Just 26 of the original 54 competitors reached the chequered flag in Belgium. "It was very difficult to drive in the rain because of the visibility and the aquaplaning," said Bryner. Calderari added: "I have never taken part in a stranger race than this one. The aquaplaning was incredible. We raised the level of the car during the night, which made it much easier to drive in the wet and we should have done it much sooner." The race was won by the N-GT class Freisinger Motorsport Porsche driven by Stephane Ortelli, Marc Lieb and Roman Dumas, and the Ferrari drivers applauded their achievement as the first from their category to win a race outright. "They had the right car for the conditions, the team and the support that they needed to win this 24-hour race," said Calderari. BMS Scuderia Italia team manager Tiziano Minuti was delighted with the result. "With just seven minutes to the finish we had a pit stop with a broken radiator," said a relieved Minuti as his driver took the flag. "This was our 24-hour car, it was not going for points at six and at 12 hours. "I think this is the best race in the world. Prodrive won at Le Mans, and I think this race is as hard with the changes in the weather, the pit strategy, which tyres to go on and who could drive with slicks on a damp track. It was a real challenge but I am really pleased for the team as they have worked for about 50 hours to get the two cars ready for the start. It was an incredibly hard race, with lots of safety cars but we didn’t make any mistakes in the pit stops and this helped us with our end result." Bobbi was on hand to applaud his team-mates across the line. "It is a very good result for the team, but not so good for me!" he said. "I think that at the next round in Anderstorp, it will be an important race for the championship. You cannot win everywhere, and to be honest I would rather win a flat out, three hour race, than to take my chance with luck in a 24-hour race." |
