02.08.2003 TOMAS ENGE BLASTS PRODRIVE FERRARI 550 ONTO GTS POLE POSITION AT TROIS RIVIERES |
In
a move which surprised a few, but delighted many, Tomas Enge of the Czech
Republic today defied expectations and set the fastest GTS qualifying time
in his Care Racing supported Prodrive Ferrari 550 Maranello. He claimed
class pole position (8th overall) for tomorrow’s 3 hour race on the streets
on Trois-Rivières, Quebec, while his team mate, David Brabham will
line up just behind him on the 5th row of the grid.
Enge’s time of 1m 01.557 was just one tenth of a second quicker than the Corvette of Oliver Gavin, and Brabham was only three tenths of a second behind that – 1m 01.992. The close quality of the qualifying bodes well for an exciting start to tomorrow’s race. Tomas Enge, driving car no88, said afterwards: “Well, it’s amazing, I can’t really believe we are on pole, it’s a bit of a surprise for me. In all the sessions so far we have been behind our competitors but we made a very big set up change to the car since this morning which helped us. I put everything into that pole-winning lap, 100% everywhere, and was right on the edge all through it. Thank you to the guys on the team and to Michelin for giving me a great set up, and great tyres to do the job. It’s my first time here at Trois-Rivières and I was learning the circuit right up to qualifying. I think I know it now.” David Brabham, car no80, commented: “It’s a great experience, my first time qualifying the car, and learning about how the tyres come in and getting the maximum out of it. I didn’t feel like I quite got quite enough out of myself out there, but it’s a great result for the team. We know we are consistent, we’ve got a good race set up and good race tyres so it should be a great fight right to the finish.” |
