Following his opening race win in Spa, Gabriele Tarquini has become the driver with the highest number of successes in the revived FIA European Touring Car Championship.

Since 2001, the Italian had claimed 13 race wins for Honda and Alfa Romeo, leaving his countryman Fabrizio Giovanardi at 12. Tarquini scored his 13 successes in 34 starts, meaning that he won one race each 2.6 in which he took part. Joint third in these statistics are Nicola Larini and Jörg Müller, each with 7 race wins.

So far 15 drivers have managed to score at least one win since the Championship was revived in 2001. The total number of drivers who took the start in at least one round of the FIA ETCC is of 88 (from 15 Countries), and 28 of them obtained at least one podium result. The only driver who started in all the 52 races so far is Giovanardi; Larini has missed only one, while French Independent driver Eric Cayrolle has missed two. Larini has also obtained the most second places, 16, while Dirk Müller has finished 7 times third.

Tarquini also tops the statistics for pole positions and fastest laps. Seven times the current ETCC leader has emerged as the fastest driver in the qualifying session, jointly holding this honour with Giovanardi while Larini is third in this list with 5 pole positions.

As for the fastest laps, Tarquini has set 13, Giovanardi 9 and Larini 8. Since 2001, 11 car manufacturers have been represented in the Championship, and 5 of them, Alfa Romeo, Audi, BMW, Honda and Nissan have won races.

Meanwhile Gabriele Tarquini has gone into the FIA ETCC summer break clinging onto a slender driver series lead. With eight races left he has an advantage over BMW driver Jorg Muller of just two points, while Dirk Muller is a further two points adrift.

Next up in joint fourth place is Tarquini's Autodelta team mate Nicola Larini, tied on 57 points with BMW GB driver Andy Prilaux. Roberto Colciago, the third factory Alfa runner is sixth but a massive twenty points further adrift, meaning that this year championship will be fought in the closing stages out by five drivers: Tarquini, Jorg and Dirk Muller, Prilaux and Larini.
