13th August 2002: Anthony Davidson
replaces Alex Yoong at Minardi
Minardi
are to rest second driver Alex Yoong for this weekend's Hungarian Grand
Prix, replacing him with current BAR test driver Anthony Davidson. Yoong
will also miss the next Grand Prix at Spa, returning for the final three
races.
After failing to qualify the Minardi-Asiatech for two of the last three races, the team hope that some time away from the pressure cooker atmosphere of a Formula 1 weekend will help Yoong to rebuild his confidence, coupled with a test programme that will allow him to practice qualifying techniques. Alex Yoong is Malaysia's first ever F1 driver, making his Grand Prix debut for the Minardi team at the tail end of last season. 23-year-old Anthony Davidson is BARs current test and reserve driver, contracted to the team until 2006. Team boss Dave Richards was delighted to release him from his testing duties for the next two races, believing that the experience he gains will be beneficial to his career development. Davidson finished second in the British Formula 3 Championship last year driving for Carlin Motorsport and won the presigious FIA Formula 3 European Cup against the cream of current F3 talent. He joined BAR at the end of last year, believing that a test contract with the F1 outfit would best serve his career. He has since carried out over 12,000 kms of testing at the wheel of the BAR-Honda's in testing. Davidson is looking forward to the race this weekend although admitting not having been to the Hungaroring before and little aquaintance with the Faenza-based Minardi outfit means that his F1 debut will be a steep learning curve. |
