At
the conclusion of the weekend's Costa Smeralda Rally, the fourth event in the
Italian Rally Championship, the Fiat Punto Abarths driven by reigning
champion Paolo Andreucci and Giandomenico Basso finished in first and third
place the two-wheel drive Super 1600 class.
Splitting the Puntos of Andreucci and Basso was Travaglia in a Peugeot, while
the overall winner of the event was Navarra in a Subaru, followed by Longhi in a
similar car and Dati in a Mitsubishi.
On a rally over unmade roads, which posed a particularly difficult terrain for
two-wheel drive cars, at the end of the first leg Andreucci was fastest overall
in the Super 1600 class, before sharing out the stage wins with Basso during the
special sections in the second leg.
Basso meanwhile had performed a fighting comeback after going off the road and
being hindered by a power-steering problem during the first leg.
The situation in the Drivers Championship now sees Andreucci slip down into
second place, a single point behind Navarra, while Basso drops from joint second
to fifth. In the Manufacturers standings Fiat is close on the heels of Subaru
and ahead of Mitsubishi, Renault, Citroen and Peugeot.
