08.04.2005 Four Maserati MC 12 racers will be in FIA GT Championship action at Monza this weekend, while the Maserati Trofeo series also kicks off at the Italian circuit

Monza is hosting this week-end the first round of the FIA GT Championship and of the Trofeo Vodafone Maserati Europe.

Four Maserati MC12 sportscars will compete in the FIA GT series: two from the Vitaphone Racing Team, with drivers Michael Bartels/Timo Scheider and Fabio Babini/Thomas Biagi. The other pair will be entere by JMB Racing with drivers Andrea Bertolini/Karl Wendlinger and Philippe Peter/Roman Rusinov/Chris Burcombe.

During the first practice session yesterday, with both dry and wet track, Maseratis obtained the fastest time with Bartels/Scheider (Vitaphone, 1:45.643), the third position with Babini/Biagi (Vitaphone, 1:45.881), the fourth place with Bertolini/Wendlinger (JMB, 1:46.642) and the sixth with Peter/Rusinov/Burcombe (JMB, 1:48.851).

The Trofeo Vodafone Maserati Europe, at the third edition, has an entry list of thirty five drivers coming from four countries: Italy, Germany, the UK, Switzerland. The series is usng this year a new car, the Trofeo GranSport, which is derived from the GranSport road version.

As usual, some guests, VIP, journalists, are joining the entry list. In Monza, model Jodie Kidd and former Formula One driver Tiff Needell will race the Pirelli liveried car. The Toora sponsored car will be used by DJ Ringo, a popular Italian showman, and Stefania Grassetto, who won a female title in Italy in the touring cars series.

Another female racer, Alexandra Gallo will also race in Monza. She has plenty of experience, having raced in previous seasons in both sportscars and touring cars. Alberto Pizzicanella will share the GranSport with Alexandra.

Former winner of the inaugural Vodafone Maserati Trofeo series two years ago, Emanuele Smurra, is once again joining the championship, and will share his car with his brother Stanislao.

Qualifying for the FIA GT Championship and the Maserati Trofeo is scheduled to take place tomorrow, as today will take place in Italy the funeral ceremony for Pope John Paull II, and as such there will be no track action.
