In 2004 Italian wine producer Scrimaglio introduced a wine collection in collaboration with Fiat Auto. The Linea Fiat Heritage wines were introduced during the 2004 Fiat Events, employing the retro-style Fiat badge implemented by Fiat Brand Promotion. Since then, Scrimaglio have also introduced wines for the Alfa Romeo and Lancia brands, and are now being distributed across Europe. One of the most recent Scrimaglio agents is Belgian-based Peter Verbruggen, who imports the wine for the entire Benelux region.
The Scrimaglio Family originated in France, where their name was Escrimeaux, meaning fencing master. The Scrimaglio Family was forced into exile during the persecution of the Huguenots, following Saint Bartholomew’s night massacre on August 24, 1572. The Scrimaglio Family settled in Nizza Monferrato, an area in the Piemonte region nestled in the heart of a zone whose wine growing traditions date back to the 1200’s. In 1254 the town became part of the Marquisate of Monferrato and for a period of time, endured a series of lengthy sieges. As early as the beginning of the 1600’s, the chronicles of the period mention the Scrimaglio family, who settled in the hills between the “Costa del Sole” and the “Valle del Vento”, on the boundaries of the lands of the Marquis of Nizza and Castelvero. Until the turn of the century, the Scrimaglio family occupied themselves mostly with the growing of grapes, which they sold to wineries.
Since 1900, the Scrimaglio family have been active winemakers. With the necessary devotion, passion and well-considered investment, the Scrimaglio family have laboured at the winery until what it has become today: an unmitigated wine trade that is renown far from the borders of Italy. The beautiful vineyards lie in the Nizza Monferrato (Asti) which is situated between the Mediterranean coast and the foothills of the Alps, towards the South East of the Fiat Auto headquarters in Turin. Both the sun and the wind give a positive effect on the vineyards and each year the makers strive towards making wines of surprisingly high quality. The regional Barbera and the generally known Chardonnay are two grape varieties in particular which prosper well here.
The wine on offer therefore varies from, on the one hand, soft, smooth through to strong red wines ripened on wood, and, on the other hand, white wines which are fresh and fruity through to full and rounded tastes with light touches of oak. For
the Fiat wine there is even a refreshing fizzy wine available.

Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Lancia wines from the Scrimaglio winery are now available across the Benelux via importer Peter Verbruggen (pictured above). |

It is therefore not surprising that Alfa
Romeo, Fiat and Lancia gave preference towards the Scrimaglio vineyard for the sake of these exceptional qualities, friendly cooperation and mutual respect. In the instance of the two Alfa Romeo wines, a specific bottle has been designed incorporating the famous arrowhead shape of the Alfa Romeo grille which can be found on their current range of cars. The grille on the bottle is also finished off with a high-quality Alfa Romeo emblem, and both wines are also available in a special presentation case, making it the ideal present for Alfisti for any occasion or time of year. Presentation cases are also available for Fiat and Lancia.
Scrimaglio Fashion Wine importer for the Benelux region, Peter Verbruggen, has been promoting these wines for just two months. He has been present at most major Italian car events in Benelux, including Viva Italia at Assen, and latterly at SpaItalia at the famed Spa-Francorchamps racing circuit. He is currently building up his network, with wines going on sale at selected Alfa Romeo, Fiat and Lancia dealerships in Belgium, The Netherlands and Luxembourg. “Traditionally, I am a cheese farmer. I got into the business of exporting traditional Belgium trappist cheeses into Italy. The Italians have a soft spot for the world-famous trappist Belgian beer, so my cheeses also found a lot of favour in Italy. It was through this business how I came into contact with Scrimaglio to import and distribute their Fashion Wines in Benelux.”
Future events during the summer period where Peter will be selling his wines will include the Spettacolo Sportivo at the famous Zandvoort racing circuit during the weekend of 16-17 September.
