Under a bright and sunny sky 130 cars crossed the start ramp for the first event of the 2007 Rally
Universitário Fiat season in Brazil. The rally took
place last Sunday (15th April) in the city of Sorocaba,
which is located in the state of São Paulo, and among
the large entry more than two dozens cars came from
distant cities including Belo Horizonte, the São Paulo
capital, and São José dos Campos, to participate in a
rally that is disputed only by university students.
The event has an embedded charitable nature and during
the day 893 cans of powdered milk and 269 books were
collected, which were then donated to several charity
institutions in the city, while another important
institution, the “Banco de Olhos of Sorocaba City”, set
up a stand during the event to get people involved in
the problem of the lack of Brazilian medical donors.
Luciano Bernardo and Fábio Godói, from the Metrocamp
University driving a Fiat Uno, were the overall winners
of the most important category of the Rally
Universitário Fiat. In spite of having previously
participated in five rounds of Fiat’s 'University
Rally' before, last weekend was the first time that they
had made it onto the highest step of the
podium. Bernardo and Fábio were competing together with
administration student Rafael Rozemberg.

He was on the team as an observer and was participating
for the first time in this rally, and he could
hardly believe that he had finished his debut with a
victory, "Fábio gave us luck", said Luciano. He didn't
though mention the crew's talent and harmony, one they
are one of the most regular competitors in the Rally
Universitário Fiat. The opening event was very
successful amongst the university students, Thiago
Carceroni didn't worry about traveling 700 km just to
participate in the event. He left Belo Horizonte, the
city where Fiat’s huge Brazilian assembly plant is
located, on Saturday, collecting his partner Marcelo
Couto on the way. The two met each other during the last
stage of the 2006 season and decided to form up a team
this year. The effort was very worthwhile, as they
claimed second position in the beginners category, which
was won by Abel Thomaz and Natanael Ferreira. "I liked
my first participation in the rally realised in 2006 in
my city so much that I decided to compete again,
therefore, the distance is not problem for me. The event
is so well organised that the sacrifice is well
worthwhile," said Thiago soon after the end of the race.
