This weekend
former Ferrari F1 driver Stefan Johansson will be
re-united with the Prancing Horse brand at the Ronnie
Peterson Historic Grand Prix at Anderstorp in Sweden
where he will drive a 430 Challenge for the Swedish
Ferrari importers' team, Scuderia Autoropa.
Johansson had a
long career in single-seaters in the highest echelons of the
sport but is probably best remembered for coming agonisingly
close to wining the San Marino Grand Prix in 1985. Just his
second race with the Scuderia he was on course for a
stunning victory before his car ran out of fuel with two
laps remaining. Now he will revive the many memories of the two years
he spent with Ferrari when he drives for Scuderia Autoropa,
the Ferrari Challenge dealer team of Sweden.
The Ferrari
Challenge series is the world's most exclusive single-make
racing series created as the perfect outlet for Ferrari
owners who want to race. The Ferrari Scandinavia Challenge
Series is organised by FSC ApS. The series was established
in 2001 by a group of Ferrari owners, who wanted to take the
full step into racing. Since its beginning in 2001, the
series has developed into a true race series. This weekend's
round at the Anderstorp circuit, which is part of the
Ronnie Peterson Historic Grand Prix, is the third of six
rounds in this year's calendar.
Johansson took
part in 103 Grands Prix (making 79 starts) between 1980 and
1991, collecting 88 points along the way. He won the British
F3 Championship in 1980, which was his springboard to F1. After making
a couple of attempts to qualify for Grands Prix with Shadow
in 1980 his F1 career really got underway in late 1982 with
the Honda-powered Spirit team. That led to an opportunity to
join Tyrell in 1984, where he stood in for an injured Martin Brundle mid-season, before he joined Toleman for the closing
races, making his mark with 4th place at Monza on his debut
in the Hart-powered car. Tyrell signed him for 1985 but he
was called up by Enzo Ferrari to replace the sacked René
Arnoux driving the V6 turbo 156/85 after the opening race.
After finishing
8th in the Portugal Grand Prix on his Ferrari debut,
Johansson was on course to sensationally win his
second race with the Italian team in San Marino before his fuel ran out with two
laps to go. The Swede's arrival at Ferrari came at a time when all the
F1 teams were
struggling to reach the finish line as the FIA's new maximum
fuel load rule played havoc with the cars in the closing laps.
After collecting two second place finishes and 26 points
that year, a second season with the Scuderia followed in 1986 when he
supported Michele Alboreto's title bid in the F1/86, which
brought four visits to the podium and 23 points. A year later
he moved to McLaren where he raced alongside Alain Prost.
Johansson then drove with little success for Ligier, Onyx,
AGS and finally in 1991 for Footwork, which would be his
last season in F1.
