new models Ferrari 550 GTS Maranello
UK based motorsport preparation
company, Prodrive, have developed a GT racing version of Ferrari's road
going tourer the 550 Maranello for use in the FIA GT Championship and similar
rule US series'. Developed independently by Prodrive the project has now
received some factory assistance.
The engine has been reworked by Prodrive with capacity increased to 6-litres from the original 5.5. Suspension, brakes and transmission have all been upgraded and the car, known by Prodive as a 550 GTS has a purpose race gearbox fitted. Extensive use of carbon-fibre panels has reduced the 550 GTS's weight to 1100kg. After making its debut in the FIA GT Championship during this season, the 550 GTS took a pole position and race win, becoming one of the acknowledged front runners of the series. For 2002 Prodrive will be building customer versions and plan to take the car to Le Mans. |
